There's no more waiting for the mail carrier to bring semester report cards to Deer Creek High School students.

Parents will now have immediate access to students' report cards online. School administrators have decided to no longer mail out report cards, and semester grades will be available online starting Monday.

Principal Charles Bradley said about 80 percent of parents are already enrolled in the school's online grade system that allows them to look at their children's grades throughout the year.

"We knew they were accessing those frequently,” Bradley said.

Since many parents might already have a good idea of what their students' grades are going to be before semester grades are released, administrators thought now might be a good time to stop sending cards through the mail, he said. The district will save paper and about $330 in postage by not mailing cards out, and parents can find out grades quicker, he said.

"They'll know as soon as we know,” Bradley said.

Parents who aren't enrolled in the online grade system should call the school at 348-5720 and employees will give them identification numbers for their students and guide them through the grade system which they can access on the district's Web site, www.deercreek schools.org through the link to Deer Creek High School.

Any parents without computers or Internet access can request a hard copy of grades through the office, Bradley said.
"We want it to be as easy and user-friendly as possible for the parents,” Bradley said.

Lenis DeRieux-Winkle, district director of communications, said parents of Deer Creek Middle School students can already access daily grades online but the school still will send out report cards with final grades. The elementary schools are not using online gradebook systems yet, but officials are discussing it.

Administrators will see how the change at the high school works before deciding whether to switch to online report cards for the other schools, DeRieux-Winkle said.
