DEL CITY — City officials want volunteers for a steering committee to oversee a makeover of the community center.

City Manager Mark Edwards said five to seven residents are needed to help plan the renovations. Along with attending committee meetings, members will tour centers in other communities.

"We want true public input,” Edwards said. "We plan to turn them loose to come up with a creative, workable plan that will fit our budget.”

Establishing the committee was discussed at a city council meeting this week.

The budget for the project is about $2 million, generated from a portion of a five-year sales tax passed in August, Edwards said.

The community center built in 1965 is a solid structure, but extremely outdated, Edwards said. Renovations will include remodeled restrooms, a new heating and air conditioning system, and a modern sound system, he said.

Edwards said the committee also will include a member of the city's parks board and possibly an architect, interior designer or engineer. For more information about the committee, call 671-2800.

In other business the city council:

• Accepted a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart SuperCenter to purchase smoke detectors and batteries for residents' homes. The program is for low- and moderate-income families. For more information, call 671-2892.

• Approved the use of city employees to provide equipment and traffic control May 10 for Del City Armed Forces-Shriner's Day Parade.
