It's not that he plays unlike any other wideout in America. If anything, the nation's No. 1 receiver is simply better than the rest.
He just doesn't talk like it.
In fact, the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder doesn't talk much at all.
Jones and Foley, Ala., teammate Robert Lester — a four-star safety — visited Oklahoma this weekend as the top two among Sooner recruiting targets leading up to the first day of national signing period on Feb. 6.
The pair spent a day and a half in the heartland, touring the OU campus and football facilities. They sat with coaching staff and players during the Oklahoma women's victory over Georgia Sunday.
But after 36 hours of VIP treatment, Jones and Lester offered little more than three minutes of reaction — and absolutely zero clarity as to where the pair might end up.
"The visit was alright,” Jones told SoonerScoop.com as he prepared to board a plane for Mobile on Monday. "When I talked to coach Bob Stoops, he just told me to do what I want to do.”
Chances are no one will know what Jones will want to do until Signing Day, when he's expected to announce his college decision by letter of intent.
With his trip to Norman, Jones has visited four of his final five choices — OU, Florida, Alabama and Florida State. He and Lester are scheduled to visit Texas Tech this week, but recently alluded to cancelling the visit and striking the Red Raiders from their list.
"I don't know if we're going to take it,” said Lester, an admitted soft Alabama commitment expected to sign with whichever team Jones picks. "We're going to have to go back and talk about it.”
Jones was hosted by Sooner tight end Jermaine Gresham, a highly lauded prospect from the 2006 recruiting class. Tailback Mossis Madu hosted Lester.
"(Madu) was a nice guy, but I really liked Jermaine Gresham,” Lester told SoonerScoop. "That guy is hilarious.”
Of Oklahoma's 20 commitments this year, only one — quarterback Landry Jones — signed early and enrolled at semester.
The four-star passer from Artesia, N.M., sat with Jones and Lester throughout the Sooner women's game Sunday, exchanging frequent laughs with the pair.
As a senior, Julio Jones caught 68 passes for 1,181 yards and 16 touchdowns, despite battling injury much of the season. He also rushed for 168 yards and another score on his way to Mr. Football Alabama honors.
Lester, a lesser-known prospect before 2007, is rated the nation's No. 23 safety according to Rivals.com. He committed to Alabama on Oct. 12 but has since wavered to consider Oklahoma.
"They decided to stay extra,” Foley High coach Todd Watson said. A third Alabama prospect, five-star athlete Burton Scott, was scheduled to join Jones and Lester in Norman but was notified his trip had been canceled by OU coaches late Friday.
"Since they aren't coming in until later (Monday), I haven't heard from them yet about their visit.”
Given the late trip to Norman and pending Texas Tech cancellation, Oklahoma and Alabama appear to be the favorites to land America's No. 4 overall player and his teammate.
That makes sense, considering how much the schools have in common.
"The signs, the people, it was just like Alabama,” Lester said of OU.
Added Jones: "Yeah, it reminded me of Alabama.”
So many mysteries, so few words.
