Norman's storm debris burn site at Robinson Street and 12th Avenue NE ignited this morning, briefly burning out of control until firefighters could contain it.

Workers at the site have not been burning debris for the past two days, but an ember from an earlier fire may have started the fire, Assistant Fire Chief James Bailey said.

By 11:30 a.m., the fire was under control and now is being called a "controlled burn."

Firefighters have trucks and equipment positioned to keep the fire from crossing Robinson and 12th, Bailey said.

I thought when all this started they said they were going to mulch it. Why did they decide to burn it all when they are talking about all these limbs being such a fire hazard, when they can't keep the ones that are "controlled" under-control.

Ya' think? Wouldn't mulching require the use of a lot of fossil fuels, which would probably pollute the air as much or more than burning? Seems like a good alternative might be to let firewood dealers salvage suitable debris for sale, thereby sparing standing timber from harvest to satisfy market demand.

Another reason we should have spent the extra money to mulch instead of burn. Come out of the 1920's folks. We don't have to burn everything anymore. There are better options now.
