A University of Oklahoma student has tested positive for bacterial meningitis. The student is being treated with antibiotics and is responding well, OU President David L. Boren said.

Boren said the state Health Department notified OU Monday that the student had tested positive for the infection.

Students living in the same residential units with the student are being notified and provided treatment, Boren said.

OU has not released where the student lives.

"There is no reason for any general alarm among OU students," Boren said.

As a precaution, officials at Goddard Health Center, 620 Elm Ave., have set up a procedure for students who feel they need evaluation or precautionary treatment. Students should go to the main entrance at Goddard, where sign will be posted directing them from there, officials said.

Bacterial meningitis is spread through close, personal contact such as kissing or eating or drinking using the same utensils. Symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting and a rash.
