State lawmakers have approved legislation that would require prenatal classes to include instruction on the risks of drug and alcohol use during pregnancy.

The measure by Rep. Kris Steele, R-Shawnee, was approved Wednesday by the House Public Health Committee. It now goes to the full House for a vote.

The measure would mandate that physicians, nurses and others who provide prenatal care and instruction also provide information on the risks of drug or alcohol use during pregnancy to the unborn child and to the mother. It would also require training on the risks of underage drinking

The committee's chairman, Rep. Doug Cox, R-Grove, says alcohol use during pregnancy can lead to fetal-alcohol syndrome in an unborn child and delay the child's development.

Jason..you called me semi literate...does this mean that you are illiterate and are making fun of me because I use decent vocabulary and know a few more phrases than "get er done" and born red, bleed red?? Also, please explain to me how I'm "smarmy" because I'm concerned over somebody that doesn't have the ability to be concerned over themselves...explain to me how your attitude of "yer one of them thar commie types" equates to how you think the situation ought to be handled. I typed this slow to make it easier for you so you don't break a sweat....

Absolutely Right Carrie..I never have heard that..but I do vehemently detest the persons who don't care if they're pregnant and go out and abuse substances...if the majority of people in this state had a real concern for the unborn, then laws like this wouldn't be required...but as Jason so eloquently pointed out.."nobodys gonna tell us whut we can do here"....that says it all...

By they should be imprisoned, I mean the moms.
Carrie, Choctaw - Feb 7, 2008 at 7:45 am
I think all babies should be checked for drugs and alcohol in their system when they are born and if anything is found they should be imprisoned. Why is it ok to do it when they are in the womb but once they are out here if that happens then it's a problem? As to Paul's comments obviously he has never seen or had lo listen to the babies that have been put through this torture so their "mom" could get high or drunk while pregnant. We should always be watching out for the innocent and the ones that can't watch out for themselves.

I've found Jason in my many years that the ones who scream the loudest about invasion of privacy and things of that nature are usually the ones with the most to hide and the most skeletons in the closet. You are a classic example of why Oklahoma hovers at the bottom in quality of life issues, why a larger than average percentage of kids here are abusers, why a higher than average percentage of teenage pregnancies occur, why you rank near the top in fatness, heart attack, stroke, etc. Your attitude is like "nobody's gonna tell me I cain't eat that thar chicken fried steak 6 times a week and I'll ram it down my kids gullets too", then complain about the cost of medical care...................................I also agree with Lawrence about NOT making up any new laws..but from the stats..the parents of Oklahoma aren't doing their job, you've got 89,000 plus kids 13-17 who are binge drinkers, so it goes far beyond experimentation with booze..wake up Okies! Your stubborn attitude is killing you and your kids.....

Once again, the government needs to stop making laws protecting people from themselves. Protecting people that can't protect themselves is another story such as infants and unborn children. People need education - they need to know the consequences of their actions and not just be told that it is bad because they don't believe the government or warning labels. On the otherhand - there is a time that education and rehab is too late, and there should be severe consequences for adults making poor decisions. Mothers having crack babies should be charged and imprisoned. A proactive program for young adults is a fine idea, but a reactive program for offenders is a waste of time and taxpayers money.

Yeah, you're a Nanny-stater. And a smarmy, semi-literate savant to boot. What you call "getting the job done" free men and women call "interfering in people's private lives." It's no wonder, with sheep such as yourself, that we live in a society that increasingly resembles the old Soviet Union.
Jason, Edmond - Feb 6, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Nanny staters? Don't blame me dude due to the fact the parents aren't doing their jobs....you Okies have one of the highest rates going in this country for abuse...so somebody is breaking down in getting the job done....and from your attitude, I see where and why.....you'd better go check Okies stats on where their youth is headed, cause it ain't pretty....people like you who don't do the job themselves are the reason these new stupid bills/laws are enacted...

Sure, Paul, and while we're at it why not just have mandatory classes for everyone in the state about the importance of eating our vegetables and washing behind our ears? Hell, why JUST have CLASSES, why not install two-way monitors in everyone's home watched over by state employees so they can visually check in on us from time to time and make sure we're all being good, healthy little boys and girls and getting to bed on time? I read about a system like this in a novel written by some English fella a while back, set in the year 1984...You nanny-stater's thirst to butt your noses into every aspect of private life never ceases to amaze me.
Jason, Edmond - Feb 6, 2008 at 7:09 pm
From the stats in Oklahoma concerning all teenagers involved in drug/alcohol abuse, they should be targeting ALL of them and not just pregnant ones...Oklahoma has one of the worst standings in the nation on teen substance abuse....

This is a Republican legislator? Mr. Steele, most of us are looking to cut government regulations, mandates, and interference. The idea frankly reads like it was formulated by high school kids. More forms, more costs, more reason for the careless to avoid prenatal care in the first place.

It never hurts to remind the pregnant mother but I believe most alcoholics/drug users already know the risks but their addiction overwhelms them.
