On charter schools, state's ranking is OK

Oklahoma's charter school law — caught in a tug-of-war to either be expanded or overturned in court — fell in the middle of a ranking this week assessing the strength of charter school laws nationwide.

The Center for Education Reform placed Oklahoma 19th among the 40 states and District of Columbia with charter school laws.

In addition to being ranked, the Washington-based education reform group gave states letter grades A through F based on a variety of factors, the report showed.

Oklahoma received a B.

The factors states were graded on included limits on the number of new schools; funding opportunities; and independence from local control and collective bargaining.
