Norvell to make $210,000
New OU wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell will make $210,000 in base and supplemental compensation in 2008, according to documents obtained by The Oklahoman through the Freedom of Information Act.

Norvell — who reportedly earned $300,000 as the offensive coordinator at UCLA last year — replaced Kevin Sumlin, who departed OU to become the head coach at Houston.

Sumlin made $185,000 in base and supplement compensation at OU in 2007.

Sooners release redshirt names: OU recently disclosed which players received redshirts last season: DE Frank Alexander, DE David Anderson, LB Austin Box, WR Ryan Broyles, FB Buck Buchanan, DE Jontae Bumpus, DB Quinton Carter, FB Matt Clapp, OL Kody Cooke, K Spencer Covey, DB Sean Edwards, DB Jamell Fleming, OL Jason Hannan, FB Arron Hayes, DB Desmond Jackson, LB Travis Lewis, K Matthew Moreland, DB Sam Proctor, TE Trent Ratterree, OL Donald Stephenson, K Jimmy Stevens, WR Tyler Stradford, DB Arthur Thomas, OL Alex Williams and WR Corey Wilson.

Sophomore wide receiver Brandon Caleb and senior defensive end John Williams received medical redshirts after missing most of last season due to injuries.

Bowers on team, but not roster: Sooner reserve safety Brett Bowers is not listed on the team's official online roster.

OU sports information Kenny Mossman confirmed that the omission is no mistake, but that Bowers remains on the team.

Mossman said coach Bob Stoops might clarify at the first day of spring practice as to why Bowers is not listed on the roster.

Bowers will be a senior next season.

•OU pro day on March 11: OU will have its pro testing day the morning of March 11 in the Everest Indoor Training Center. The event will be open to the media but closed to the public.

ESPN ranks Sooners No. 2: OU doesn't play its 2008 opener for another six months, but that hasn't stopped the preseason predictions from pouring in.

Mark Schlabach from ESPN.com has ranked the Sooners No. 2 in his poll, behind No. 1 Georgia.

Writes Schlabach: "The Sooners lost three very good juniors — receiver Malcolm Kelly, linebacker Curtis Lofton and cornerback Reggie Smith — to the NFL draft. But with tailback DeMarco Murray and QB Sam Bradford coming back, the Sooners' offense could be explosive. The Big 12 schedule is favorable: Oklahoma doesn't play Missouri and gets Kansas and Texas Tech at home.”

Ohio State, USC and Missouri round out Schlabach's top five.

There haven't been too many games that I've seen where the Sooners were beaten talent-wise out on the field. I certainly don't put full blame on the coaches as desire & heart play bigtime roles in what happens out there. I'm not certain if it's a philosophy problem that may exist with OU, but it just seems that the Sooners need to be doubted by the media in order to turn it up a notch & play to their full potential.(As witnessed in their performance vs Mizzou) I'm hoping that praises come less frequently in '08 so there is something to prove out on the field. Hype has a way of making good teams too confident. We all suffer when witnessing the Sooners not playing to their potential. Heaven help the other teams when the Sooners do!

Barton in Idabel, where do you coach? Idabel University? They must be defending champions on some level as you know much more than the coaches at my alma mater. O-coord's adjust their game to create mismatches as well as D-coord's. I tell you this Coach Venable was good at adjustments. Coaches have accountability, I DO agree with you there. I played defense so I'm not going to elaborate on the offensive side of the ball. I CAN tell you this from my experience and watching OU every game this season, we did NOT lose one game this year based on DEFENSIVE philosophy. Colorado=Special Teams. Texas Tech=Bradford going down. WV=Ran a totally different playbook than their regular season. I'm not blaming the offense either. There is so much that goes into coaching that most people have NO IDEA about. Even thought I played at OU, I'm not a very good arm chair QB/Coach myself. Our coaches do an excellent job at what they do. #8 is a strong possibility in 08. Mark it down. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!!

last yr oklahoma had all the talent they needed to win the NC. Blame it on the coaches..form top to bottom. Stoops has the final call on the game planning. Why he keeps going along with venebles and wilson is unbelievable. Venebles running that damn zone defense when OU had so much talent to run man on man coverage. It really made me sick when other teams would simply throw in front of the def backs, catch the ball for a 5, 10, or 15 yard gain and most times get a few more yards after the catch. If OU had been playing man coverage that wouldnt have happened. And after seeing it time after time, stoops still let venebles run it. So there for i really cant blame venebles, Stoops has the final call. But he doesnt have the guts to fire venebles or wilson. Wilson....Mr. predictable...run run pass over and over. Geez.....Lets pray and hope that Norvell can talk some seance to Mr. predictable. OU has a great class of players coming next yr. But if the coaching continues as it is it wont matter if OU has the best players in the country, they will lose with the same old coaching schemes.

Well I have a problem with it. D-1 schools are ranked by the players that they have coming back and the players that they have recruited and or coming off a redshirt. With that being said. Last year is last year. You can't punish the kids for something that the kids did last year. But your thinking (Oh wait, you kids can't be ranked in the top 10 because you didn't win your bowl games the last 4 years). How stupid is that? If you don't like winning at least 10 games a year, you can cheer for someone else. But don't forget too put on your cheerleading uniforms on because you guys are acting like too spoiled little girls.BOOMER SOONER!!

I'm also a huge OU fan, but I'm not as nice as Randall. I'd rank OU 20, or worse. It's a sick feeling knowing your team is about to lose another BCS game. On a positive note, Bob did say, FINALLY, that they were going to review their bowl preparation and make some changes.

I hate to admit it but I don't have much problem with your statement Randall.

I'm a life-long OU fan, and I wouldn't rank us in anywhere in the top 10 until we demonstrate that we can play like we care in a bowl game.
