OKLAHOMA CITY — Sooner fans, you can have your memories back.

An NCAA appeals committee has partially overturned the punishment of the infractions committee, giving OU back its wins from the 2005 season that had been vacated.

OU won eight games in 2005, including the Holiday Bowl.

Said OU coach Bob Stoops: "This decision is a great thing for those individuals involved with our 2005 team. Most of the players on our current roster were not on that team, but I know those victories mean a lot to the players and coaches who were here at that time."

"While we are pleased with the findings by the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee, we are most pleased for the 100 student athletes and coaches who played by the rules and worked their hearts out for a successful 2005 season," OU president David Boren said.

The appeals committee said OU should not have been found guilty of separate violations for failing to detect that football players were working at a Norman car dealership and failing to monitor those students' employment.

The appeals panel partially upheld a "failure to monitor" violation imposed against Oklahoma, saying that the university didn't use established institutional procedures that would have revealed the employment of 12 players at the dealership in summer 2005.

The NCAA infractions committee had ruled that OU failed to collect earnings statements in a timely manner that would have revealed the players' employment.

"We fully appreciate and respect the process required in these matters," OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "We are pleased that the NCAA recognized the University's approach in taking immediate and significant action upon our discovery of the violations and of the work and cooperation of the University of Oklahoma in the ultimate detection of the violations. We appreciate the processes established by the NCAA and our obligations as a member institution."

Soonerman...I couldn't give a rat's rip about whether OU (or OSU for that matter) gets their wins back - and I'm an OSU alum - but I'm not must of a sports fan. But I will say this. Your comments just make you, and other OU fans like you, look like an arrogant a$$. Yes, OU is a great team. But the fans leave a lot to be desired.

Guess what osu fans, No one gives a damn about what you think, We are the greatest football program of all time and by far the best in the great state of Oklahoma, We are above the NCAA rules and if we cheat nothing happens. BOOMER SOONER!!!!!!!!!!!

Brian...I was going to not even comment on this article because these articles always turn into an OU/OSU bashing and brings out the worst of both fans. However, I could help but notice that while you were bashing OSU, you had many misspellings. So, Mr. OU fan, before you make fun of OSU, get out a dictionary. It's their not there, and it's lose, not loose.

Hey guys--How about that bedlam wrestling win??? Great job Sooners. Now ladies--beat the hell out of the cowgirls. The circle is almost complete. Obviously the NCAA admitted to making a mistake. Now if only Kelvin would!!! BOOMER SOONER

THE NCAA does not want to damage cash cows like OU. Prepare for USC to get similar treatment over Reggie Bush. Now if it was a bottom half of a BCS conference school, watch out. Time to make an example.

The problem is how do you punish those that committed the offenses? McRay (sp?) got run out of town. The players had to transfer. Considering the players (that aren't cheating/taking money) don't get much from a University beyond publicity (if it were about the scholarship they'd surely choose Harvard, Standford or Yale over OU, USC, and Texas, in spite of them being good schools). If they paid players then maybe there'd be some recourse. Or imagine offering them health care down the road for their inevitable injuries that crop up related to taking a beating for years for the University's benefit.

Man I got on here to read about the infractions and it turns into OSU vs OU. Anyway I believe that the NCAA penalties should follow the coach and or the player in violation. ONLY if the university can be proven to be part of the problem (cheating, etc) should the entire program be penalized. Case in point....Sampson. OU got penalized while Sampson went on to another job scott free and yet he violated the rules once again. Guess what???? Indiania will be the ones in trouble this time. I am not a Sooner fan but seriously why should the entire OU team/coaches be penalized if a few players and donors were the ones guilty of violating NCAA rules? Now if the coaches and university knew then yes they should be hit with penalities but not until then.

Is 2005 over? Has OU won a bowl game since? Everytime the $6 million figurehead gets outcoached in a bowl game, or a game even, with a national championship on the line, they keep raising his pay. I don't want to hear another word about all the morons being at OSU. Bob, quit trying so hard. Just play the game the way it was meant to be played...for fun. That's how the last two teams OU faced in bowl games played it...and look at the results. Oh, and give some of the money back; you didn't earn it.

Well I can understand why Don thinks OU cheats all the time mainly because most OSU fans only have half a brain anyway. OSU lets child molesters on there team and still cant win more than 7 games. Hey Don does OSU take pride in losing? Does OSU cheat to loose? I mean you had Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas on your team and still managed to loose games. Glad to see your keeping up the tradition of losing at OSU and keep your players away from elementary schools. BOOMER SOONER!!
Brian, Tallahassee - Feb 22, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Don, please go home. The Village is missing its idiot.
harry, lake forest - Feb 22, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Yes, Don, OSU takes the high road and is a "higher Learning" facility... Didn't a famous football player by the name of Dexter Manley graduate even though he was illiterate and couldn't read???
Rufus, spencer - Feb 22, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Looks like they didn't waste a mind on don, either.

Naturally, rather than address the well-documented continuity of cheating in Norman, most sooner fans would rather point to the wins all that cheating "earned" them. Yes, my Cowboys were guilty of ignoring the rules to keep up on a couple of occasions. However, we are not the program that just can't seem to keep it's nose clean. If you don't care how the wins come, as long as they come, then OU is the team for you...no matter the sport.
