Jones gets a head start
Landry Jones could be back in Artesia, N.M., right now, mulling over which girl to ask to prom. Instead, the four-star quarterback graduated from high school in the winter so he could enroll in college early and participate in OU's spring drills.

All of which can be overwhelming, but beneficial, OU coach Bob Stoops said.

"I'm always careful with these guys who are giving up their second semester to come in early,” Stoops said. "You have to watch for homesickness and make sure they aren't getting overwhelmed, but (Jones) seems to be doing great. It will give him an opportunity to go through our strength and conditioning program and really get into our offensive system. He also will work with Josh (Heupel) and our offensive coaches on his mechanics and footwork, all things that will help him get better.”

•OU-Cincinnati looms big: OU's Sept. 6 showdown with Cincinnati ranks No. 17 in non-conference games for 2008, according to CollegeFootballNews.com. The two teams combined for 21 victories last year. OU at Washington on Sept. 13 is listed at No. 28.

•OU-Boise State Fiesta Bowl ESPN's No. 2 highlight: Just how captivating was Boise State's 43-42 victory over OU in the 2006 season Fiesta Bowl? Well, according to ESPN, it's the second greatest highlight of all time. The game nearly won ESPN's 16-highlight mock tournament, which was voted on by fans. The Fiesta Bowl lost to the "Miracle on Ice” for the title.

•LB Reed not onroster: OU linebacker Mike Reed is no longer listed on the Sooners' online roster. No official announcement has been made that Reed is off the team, although a clarification could be coming Tuesday, when Stoops is expected to meet with reporters. Last year, Reedarrived in Norman as a five-star junior-college recruit, but never made an impact on the field and was passed on the depth chart by Curtis Lofton, who eventually became the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

• OU cheerleader recognized: OU sophomore Emily Erikson has been named Sports Illustrated's cheerleader of the week.

Reed will be enrolling (or is already at) at another school and is not on the team; no chance on him coming back. Stoops will announce this tomorrow. He's academically ineligible for this semester. Maybe UCO what I hear...

Sidebar: Bowers isn't on the official roster either, but could rejoin the team.
