Is this really spring?
Oklahoma State's first spring football practice was supposed to be in shorts and helmets. Instead, it was sweats and helmets due to a wind chill temperature of 26 degrees inside Boone Pickens Stadium.

"It was a little chilly, but it wasn't that bad because we didn't have much wind,” coach Mike Gundy said. "Since they've closed the west end, we haven't had any issues with the wind. That makes it much more comfortable.”

•Pettigrew case delayed: Brandon Pettigrew's case, in which he is charged with assault on a police officer, has been delayed until May 5. Pettigrew appeared in Payne County District Court on Monday with his attorney.

The senior tight end was arrested on Jan. 20, when police responded to a fight involving 10 to 15 people. According to a police report, Pettigrew was given an opportunity to leave the scene but refused and allegedly elbowed an officer in the chest.

•Good retention: Gundy, the only coach or player available following the first practice, said twice-a-week, one-hour film sessions with coaches help players' retention in the offseason.

"That helps a lot,” Gundy said. "They changed that rule a couple of years ago. Dez Bryant is a pretty good barometer for how much guys retained and he was pretty good today. Dez is a pretty good barometer for a lot of things.”

•Lay foundation: OSU's first two practices will be in shorts and helmets. The next four will be in full gear. The first scheduled scrimmage, half of the March 14 practice, will be open to fans and the media.

"The first five practices are installation, so there's a lot going in,” Gundy said. "The most important thing for (the newcomers) is practicing at a fast pace. It changes a lot when we get pads on and start going against each other.”
