Momentum working well for the Cowgirls

STILLWATER — Despite all the Cowgirls had done this season, few beyond their own locker room doors dared to suggest they could win at Baylor.

Now they've done that, too, adding a sweep of the Lady Bears to their impressive list of 2008 basketball accomplishments.

So far.

The list might need expanding, as Oklahoma State heads into the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., with momentum and more.

"The girls were very aware of what this game meant to us,” Cowgirls coach Kurt Budke after the game in Waco, Texas.

The Cowgirls will be the No. 3 seed in Kansas City, situated on a side of the bracket that includes Nebraska, Kansas, Texas Tech and Baylor — a collection of teams Oklahoma State stands 6-0 against this season.

Continued success this week can only boost OSU's chances at a high NCAA Tournament seed and a path that leads to the Sweet 16 in Oklahoma City.

The Big 12 Tournament stage shouldn't be an issue. The Cowgirls went 6-2 in conference road games this season, with wins at No. 17-ranked Texas A&M and No. 8 Baylor among the highlights.

By winning in Waco — where Baylor hadn't lost all season, was holding Senior Night and sniffed a share of the league championship — OSU moved to 11-5 in the conference and produced its best-ever Big 12 record.

"Our motivation started in practice,” said Cowgirls guard Andrea Riley. "They haven't lost a game at home, and that was very motivating because we were thinking, ‘Maybe we can go in there and play them tough and come out with a victory.'

"I thought we played absolutely well.”

And the Cowgirls aren't done, yet.

"I just couldn't be more proud of where we are right now,” Budke said.
