Rep. Sally Kern says she does not plan to apologize for comments in which she calls homosexuality "the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam.”

Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said she listened to about a minute of the audio that has been posted on the Internet and confirmed she made the comments, but that they were edited "without a doubt.”

"They took a part here and stopped the recording and picked up this part and made it sound like it was one long tirade,” she said. "It is a blanket misrepresentation of what I was doing.”

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, sent letters to Gov. Brad Henry and to House Speaker Chris Benge, R-Tulsa.

The Cimarron Alliance Foundation, an Oklahoma City-based group, has sent a letter to Benge stating that Kern "must apologize or be censured by the House of Representatives.”

Benge has no comment on the letter or Kern's comments, his spokeswoman said late Monday.

"The homosexual agenda is destroying this nation; it's just a fact,” Kern is heard saying on a YouTube audio segment. "I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam.”

Rep. Al McAffrey, the Legislature's only openly gay member, said he was disappointed by his colleague's comments.

"I resented the fact that she referred to myself and many of my friends that we're worse than terrorists,” said McAffrey, D-Oklahoma City. "She's referring to everyone that works there (at the state Capitol) that happens to have an alternative lifestyle because you're born that way that they're worse than terrorists.”

Kern said she made the comments in January to a Republican club meeting away from the state Capitol. Kern, a former social studies teacher in the Oklahoma City School District, said she talked about efforts by gay rights groups to target conservatives in recent elections.

"I said nothing that was not true, I said nothing out of hate and I don't believe my colleagues will censure me,” Kern said. "I was speaking about the homosexual activists who are aggressively funding pro-homosexual candidates against conservative Republicans. In 2006, they targeted conservatives across the nation, mostly at the state and local levels. They took out 50 of them.”

300,000 have played audio on Web site
Chuck Wolfe, president of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a nonpartisan group in Washington that supports gay elected officials, said Monday his organization received audio with Kern's comments a couple of weeks ago. She made the remarks during a GOP gathering that was open to the public in Oklahoma County, he said. He could not recall more specifics.

On the audio clipping, Kern can be heard saying the homosexual lifestyle "has deadly consequences for those people involved in it.”

"It is not a lifestyle that is not good for this nation. No society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades,” she said.

Wolfe said the Victory Fund posted the comments on its Web site Friday; more than 300,000 have played the clip by Monday afternoon.

"I was stunned and outraged,” Wolfe said. Equating terrorism with homosexuality "is just hate speech,” he said.

The Cimarron Alliance Foundation, which posted the audio clipping on its Web site Monday, also issued a posting asking people not to send hate mail to Kern. Kern said she has received more than 7,000 critical e-mails and hundreds of angry telephone calls.

‘A higher calling'
Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Jim Roth, who is openly gay, said America has room for diverse people and opinions.

"But I also think a public official has a higher calling then to pursue divisions and demagoguery,” Roth said. "As a public official I've taken an oath to serve 100 percent of our citizens and I regret that Representative Kern doesn't show the same respect for 100 percent of her constituents.”

Roth said comparing a "homosexual agenda” to terrorism is especially offensive.

"Her outlandish comparison to the pain that terrorists cause demonstrates how her focus is skewed by her own bias,” Roth said.

Rufus, keep going. You've got them angered. I agree with you. Keep in mind the gays compromise only a fraction of the population and even counting its supporters and apologists still don't make anything but noise. Claiming to be born gay as an excuse for aberrant behavior.. does it work with pedophilia? If someone claims to be born with a penchant for sex with little kids, is it somehow then alright? Give me a break. And yes, homosexuality is in the same neighborhood: aberrant behavior.

All I can say is it's not homosexuals who have children out of wedlock, divorce and/or abandon their children. Those activities are what is eroding our family values. I guess it's too hard for some "Christians" to look in the mirror and see they may be the cause of a lot of this country's problems.

steven give us a break,God made me gay, wow are you fooling your self and calling your self born again? I guess he made the gays in Sodom and Gomarah gay too? what a idiot quit trying to justify your exsistance as a gay and telling God created you that way and accept its a choice you make and that only and either get out of it or continue to live in it but quit trying to justify it by God because you don;t have a clue.

Church and State should never be mixed. This individual should either resign or be mandated out of office. "But according to God's word..." The bible was written by human beings. I think someone most definitely needs to start a petition to remove this individual from office for violation of the Constitution of the United States! (Legislator basing decisions upon personal religions beliefs.) And above all, how dare you compare homosexuals to terrorists. Homosexuals don't kill thousands of people in the name of their god. This individual is more like a terrorist, using god as a reason to harass homosexuals unlawfully. Not to mention the hate-crimes which will inherently increase state-wide against homosexuals for all of the regulations put in place against human beings. This is the same type of person who would have done and said the same things about African-Americans during their struggle with these types of people being in undeserving (and overly personal) power.

Steven - I believe you are the one who is trying to speak for God. We are simply repeating what He said through His Word. We know certain things, because God told us. We don't have to guess. We don't have to wonder. It is written right there in His Word for all to read. In the case of homosexuality, it is very clearly identified as sin. If you've done it once, you've committed a sin. If you continue to do it, you are living in sin. This is not what I say. This is what God's Word says.

It hurts me to my soul that Kern and these so called “family value spokes persons” condemns, and hurls verbal defecation at me because I was born differently from them. Who gives anyone the right to speak for God? I am a Gay Born again Christian and sometimes I am so ashamed by what others say in the name of Christ! I have a great wonderful family, who loves me dearly!

God created me Gay! I know this because I would never choose to live a life where others hurl hurtful insults at me! They call themselves the voice of “true family values”, then condemn anyone in their family who does not mirror themselves…what HIPOCRITES! They don’t trust God’s reason for creating Gay’s. They choose to destroy and attack instead! From my perspective they are UGLY, HATEFUL, PEOPLE, who force their Gay family members to cower and hide in the closet, or try to brainwash them into being other than what God created them to be. They are the true ABUSERS of children! Their hurtful, judgmental words cause deep wounds in Gay children (especially their own), and push them to drugs, alcohol, or possible suicide! It really pisses me off…but I need to remember what Jesus would do … I pray DEEPLY, that Kern and others who feel they are holier than me because they were born straight, REAP WHAT THEY SOW… TENFOLD!

As one who follows Jesus, I suggest we all work TOGETHER and use each other’s strengths to heal hunger and suffering in the world.

She should be congratulated! We should have more people in office like her. She speaks the truth and has guts. I would vote for again and again.

arguing on the internet and discussing your "degree's" and who is an idiot and who is the smartest here makes as much sense as putting a screen door on a submarine...as long as it keeps the flies out. Guys....and gals...this arguement is if this Rep from Oklahoma was right or wrong in her comment. She was neither right nor wrong. In her mind and her beliefs, she was right...in some of your minds and beliefs, she was wrong. Leave it there. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Leave it there. Also...if this had been said in a meeting of the House of Reps from Oklahoma, then I would say that she needs to be asked to step down, because that is not the place for such a statement, nor is anywhere a place for that sort of statement. I do not condone her statement, but I also do not judge her statement either. She has a very strong commitment to her cause just as "j" has to his. Leave it at that.

well apparently there is two of me in here, First I have to say that David in midwest city thanks for good thoughts and directly answering the question I posted early this morning. Like you I might disagree on stance but nothing can get settled with out good sound communication and an openness to at least listen to arguments. When I read this post I honestly am at a point at how can I say that I should as a gay man condone such speech, with the other hand saying I might disagree with the words but how do we draw the line at what is free speech and what is hate speech. I feel that in some instance she did cross the line comparing the whole gay community as a threat worst then terrorist but that argument was used when women wanted the vote and african americans after struggling so much got civil rights they fought long and hard for. The point being it takes words to draw attention, to bring people together to ultimately talk and work on coming to compromise on a situation. Yes Sally I am disappointed that you choose not to represent all your constituency in the 84th district, Yes I am disappointed that I have a parent that knows you and was deeply hurt by your words, and Yes I hope that one day God will reveal to you that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves and that Jesus is our salvation that he died for everyones sins, no matter age, sex, color, disease, orientation and so on, but what will be revealed is that deep down we are all human beings on this tiny planet in the middle of a huge galaxy and we all eventually will have to come to terms and face the unknown, things that we just don't understand or want to understand so we can move forward as a society and truly live a christian life as Jesus so hoped to have here.

I'm obviously not as intrigued by sexual predators as you Paul. Nice grammar Todd. Well, I'm off to my home (that is paid for) to spend a wonderful evening with my wife and kids. Yeah, I'm real uneducated and ignorant. Sorry I don't agree with living your "animalistic" lifestyle.
