Energy chiefs offer peek at playbook

Listening to Aubrey McClendon and Larry Nichols talk about the energy business is a bit like eavesdropping on a Barry Switzer conversation on the wishbone. If you know the terminology, it's great fun to hear folks discuss a topic they know and care about intimately.

The chief executive officers of the state's two largest public companies fielded reporters' questions Monday after speaking to a group of about 70 lawmakers during a luncheon at the Oklahoma History Center.

Although both men lambasted last year's immigration reform measure, House Bill 1804, the event generally involved both sides complimenting the other for their support. In fact, Sen. Jay Paul Gumm yielded time allotted to ask the energy chiefs a question to request a round of applause for the executives.

Nichols, of Devon Energy, and McClendon, of Chesapeake Energy, saved most of their venom for national politicians. Nichols said federal energy policy could be "extremely frustrating,” because many politicians express a need for greater U.
