OU tinkering with no-huddle offense
Through four practices, Sooner offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson has been implementing the no-huddle into the offensive scheme.

Because of OU's versatility in formations on offense, Wilson said the no-huddle could be a dangerous weapon for the Sooners if they decide to use it next season.

"It's the mechanics of calling plays — it's not necessarily that you're doing a different offense,” Wilson said. "Going to the no-huddle is nice, but you'd better be able to block and take care of the ball and be smart.”

The defense could also benefit from seeing the no-huddle in practice since the Sooners face it almost every other week in the Big 12.

Wilson and the other coaches will re-evaluate whether to use the no-huddle in the fall.

•Robinson, English on Lombardi watch list: OU guard Duke Robinson and defensive end Auston English have been named to the Lombardi Award watch list, given to college football's top lineman.

Robinson, OU's left guard, was a consensus All-American last year.

English, a junior defensive end, had 9 1/2 sacks to lead the Big 12 despite missing three games because of a broken bone in his ankle.

ESPN not showing Red-White game, at least for now: At the moment, ESPN has no plans to broadcast the Red-White spring game on April 12. But that has a chance of changing. ESPN and OU have had discussions, which could lead to an agreement to televise the game.

ESPN has shown the Red-White game in 2003, 2006 and 2007.

•DE Williams getting another chance: Last fall against Tulsa, defensive end John Williams suffered his second season-ending injury, this time tearing his Achilles tendon. But Williams, who was a senior last year, will have another chance.

Williams received a medical redshirt and another season of eligibility. Williams will spend the spring rehabbing but is expected to begin practicing with the team again during the summer.

"It's positive in that he gets a chance to play a full year, and it makes a huge difference defensively to have he and Auston English, two guys who were starters last year that understand our system and schemes so well and have played so well for us,” OU coach Bob Stoops said. "Really, our entire front, that's a major positive when you look at the entire front for the experience and quality of players up there that we'll really count on and hopefully will make a big difference for us.

No huddle offense are good for wearing down an opposing team defenses. In the case of OU this would be helpful in the 4th quarter when they need to run the ball and run down a clock. If a defense has been ran ragged by this then this would be a good offensive strategy to offset an average defenese. No huddle against a team like Colorado who has an attacking style defense would have been worn out by the 4th quarter when OU needed to run the ball and kill the clock. The fact that the coaching staff is looking at different strategies means they know things need to change. And this by no means says that the problems on defense are going to go away. If OU blows everyone out and then the defense's problems are over looked. Everyone will get amnesia so lets all agree a win is a win. I would rather see 13-0 by 13 blowouts then what we saw last year. And realize the days of OU's stifling defense may be a thing of the past. The big twelve has gotten better, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Texas tech, Nebraska will be better and even Colorado are now competive. Look at the SEC the so called premier league, there are few schools in that conferences that have defenses that come to play week after week. Look at how many times LSU lost to teams with good offenses. I am not an expert and don't claim to be but this isn't rocket science either. Boomer Sooner.

I don't think any of you experts are coaches. If you have ever seen a great no huddle offense you would not be complaining. In fact the offenses we can not seem to stop are no huddle offenses.

Offense isn't our problem. How's about we come up with a way to STOP someone.

Grind out clock while the players are in the huddle? How does that help? No huddle, give the defense less time to make substitutions, reads and adjustments. If OU can do it without confusing ourselves, it is a good move. I would like to see more misdirection plays myself. Getting Williams back is huge. Achilles are hard to recover from, but he was on his way to super stardom before the injury.

Why would we run no huddle? To get our defense on the field faster? We need to grind out clock because for the 1st time in the Stoops era the O has to outscore teams because the D is going to be average at best. No huddle makes no sense unless they are doing it to show the Def. what other teams do.
