OU tinkering with no-huddle offense
Through four practices, Sooner offensive coordinator
Kevin Wilson has been implementing the no-huddle into the offensive scheme.
Because of OU's versatility in formations on offense,
Wilson said the no-huddle could be a dangerous weapon for the
Sooners if they decide to use it next season.
"It's the mechanics of calling plays — it's not necessarily that you're doing a different offense,”
Wilson said. "Going to the no-huddle is nice, but you'd better be able to block and take care of the ball and be smart.”
The defense could also benefit from seeing the no-huddle in practice since the
Sooners face it almost every other week in the
Big 12.
Wilson and the other coaches will re-evaluate whether to use the no-huddle in the fall.
•Robinson, English on Lombardi watch list: OU guard
Duke Robinson and defensive end
Auston English have been named to the Lombardi Award watch list, given to college football's top lineman.
Robinson,
OU's left guard, was a consensus All-American last year.
English, a junior defensive end, had 9 1/2 sacks to lead the
Big 12 despite missing three games because of a broken bone in his ankle.
•ESPN not showing Red-White game, at least for now: At the moment,
ESPN has no plans to broadcast the Red-White spring game on April 12. But that has a chance of changing.
ESPN and
OU have had discussions, which could lead to an agreement to televise the game.
ESPN has shown the Red-White game in 2003, 2006 and 2007.
•DE Williams getting another chance: Last fall against Tulsa, defensive end
John Williams suffered his second season-ending injury, this time tearing his Achilles tendon. But
Williams, who was a senior last year, will have another chance.
Williams received a medical redshirt and another season of eligibility.
Williams will spend the spring rehabbing but is expected to begin practicing with the team again during the summer.
"It's positive in that he gets a chance to play a full year, and it makes a huge difference defensively to have he and
Auston English, two guys who were starters last year that understand our system and schemes so well and have played so well for us,” OU coach
Bob Stoops said. "Really, our entire front, that's a major positive when you look at the entire front for the experience and quality of players up there that we'll really count on and hopefully will make a big difference for us.
