Q: Did the defense play as well on Friday as it sounds? — Phil, Houston, Texas.

A: The defense dominated the 49-play scrimmage, forcing three turnovers and allowing only 168 total yards, 3.4 yards a play. But keep in mind there was no tackling and the defense often is ahead of the offense the first few weeks.

How quickly redshirt freshmen like defensive end Richetti Jones and newcomers like defensive tackle Swanson Miller and safety Lucien Antoine adapt to Division I-A football will determine how much the defense improves.

Scrimmages March 28 and April 4, and the spring game on April 12, will provide more insight. OSU has more talent on defense. How that talent meshes the next five months remains to be seen.

Defensive coordinator Tim Beckman summed it up well after Friday's scrimmage. No matter what happens in the spring, or two-a-days in August, the only way the defense can prove it's much improved is to produce when it counts during the season.

Q: When will the date be finalized for the Cowboys' season opener against Washington State in Seattle? The athletic department's Web site still shows that the date is subject to change. — Tom, Stillwater.

A: There have been rumors the Aug. 30 game might be moved to a Thursday night (Aug. 28) for ESPN, but OSU officials have indicated they would prefer to play on Saturday. All games are tentative, but it most likely will be played on Aug. 30.
