How is the backup quarterback competition shaping up? — Mike, Tulsa.

It's too early to tell. Both quarterbacks threw an interception in the first spring scrimmage a week ago, a thud scrimmage in which quarterbacks couldn't be hit.

Sophomore Alex Cate has the early edge simply because he's been in the system two seasons. Six spring practices is the first time Brandon Weeden has run OSU's offense. Coach Mike Gundy has said the redshirt freshman's "head is spinning.”

If forced to pick, I would predict Weeden wins the job. Weeden has good size, a good arm and has a maturity factor at 23 years old after playing five years of minor league baseball. But Cate also has a strong arm and the type of savvy leadership you like in a quarterback.

The next three weeks will reveal a lot.

This Friday will be the first major spring scrimmage. It's the first of three major evaluations, along with another scrimmage on April 4 and the spring game on April 12. Now is when the competition really heats up.

Will David Washington be the starting center?

We might not know that answer until after the spring game, possibly as late as two-a-days in August.

Washington was a two-year starter at center before suffering a broken leg in the third game at Troy. He's been held out of spring drills but is expected to return this week.

Coaches were encouraged with Andrew Lewis, who slid over from left guard to fill Washington's slot last season. Grant Garner showed some promise as a true freshman. At this point, it's uncertain what Washington's role will be. There's always a chance coaches might move Washington to guard.
