EDMOND — A bronze statue of a girl holding a shovel has been stolen from J.L. Mitch Park, Edmond police reported Monday.
The 4-foot-tall statue "95 Years and Planting," by sculptor Shan Gray, depicted a Girl Scout planting a tree.
The statue, weighing at least 300 pounds, was dedicated in November to commemorate the state's centennial and the achievements of the Girl Scouts organization.
Edmond Girl Scouts held fundraisers that included a car wash and a garage sale, and donations for the statue came from individuals, businesses, the Edmond Visual Arts Commission and the Scouts.
The theft was discovered Friday by Steven Hancock, a member of the city park maintenance staff. Hancock was making routine checks at the park while preparing for the weekend, said Earl London, assistant park director.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for the return of the statue. Girl Scouts are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the return of the statue in its original condition.
