Authorities have searched two Oklahoma City law firms in a bribery probe that began last fall after the arrest of an Edmond police officer and a retired officer.
Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater confirmed the ongoing investigation Thursday, but declined to answer questions about the
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation probe.
"They're following every lead, wherever it takes them,”
Prater said.
Attorney Josh Welch said an
OSBI agent served a search warrant Tuesday at the law office he shares with partner
David Ogle.
The agent also searched the offices of attorney
Joe White, who could not be reached for comment Thursday.
White is the former attorney of one of the men charged in the bribery scheme.
Welch said he was disappointed a search warrant was used because he and
Ogle have promised to cooperate with investigators since the probe began about five months ago.
The
Ogle and
Welch firm has represented
Jeremy Robert Stapley, a commercial pilot who appears to be near the center of the bribery scheme.
Stapley, whose attorney maintains he had no knowledge of the scheme, was trying to keep his driver's license last year after a drunken driving arrest, according to court papers.
Danny Austill, the Edmond police officer who administered his breath test after
Stapley's March 15, 2007, arrest, was offered cash not to appear at a hearing on the matter, court papers allege. He reported the bribe attempt, sparking an internal investigation that led to felony charges against officer
Andrew Andrade and retired officer
Chris Caplinger.
Welch said he and
Ogle had nothing to do with the bribery scheme, but he acknowledged associate
Sam Kerr, who appeared in court with
Stapley last April when he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, remains suspended from the firm.
Andrade and
Caplinger are due back in court Monday on the bribery charges.
