STILLWATER — Sean Sutton's two-year tenure as head coach at Oklahoma State ended on Tuesday.

"This is a tough day for us. I take no joy in this," OSU athletic director Mike Holder said during a press conference at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Holder explained that while Sean Sutton and his father Eddie, who proceeded him as Cowboys head coach, created high expectations for the Cowboys basketball program.

"Sean was a victim of those expectations," Holder said. "It's hard to follow a legend and when that legend is your father, that's tough to the third power."

"I'm trying to make the best of a bad situation," Holder said.

Sutton's departure was announced earlier in the day with a press release.

It was the end to a long and recently strange journey for Sutton and the Cowboys.

Sutton was 39-29 in two seasons as head coach, not counting a 4-6 record in February and March 2006 after Eddie Sutton took a leave of absence following a drunk-driving incident.

Sean Sutton came to OSU in 1990 as a transfer and spent two seasons as his father's point guard. OSU reached the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 both years.

After a year as an assistant coach at Mississippi, Sean Sutton returned to his father's staff and spent 12 1/2 seasons as an assistant before taking over for his father.

Holder dismissed the idea that there was some personal rift between him and the Sutton family.

"I like coach Sutton, both Sean and Eddie. This is my job as ad to make tough decisions, I did this because its in the best interest in our basketball program," Holder said.

Holder and Sutton met Monday to discuss the status of the program and OSU said another meeting was scheduled for Tuesday.

"We had a long conversation yesterday and we had had many in the past," Holder said. "He knew what the expectations were when he took the job. He thought he would be successful as did I. At the end of the day yesterday we mutually agreed that we had to have new leadership for the basketball program."

Holder said a national search for a new head coach would begin immediately.

"This was an extremely difficult decision, and this is a sad day for me personally and this university," Holder said. "We cannot overlook the contributions Sean has made to OSU as a player, assistant coach and head coach. OSU is deeply appreciative and grateful to Sean as well as his father Eddie, who together revived OSU basketball and made the program a consistent contender for conference, tournament and national championships."

"Sean played a major role in the ascension of OSU basketball into the top tier of the nation," said OSU president Burns Hargis. "While this was indeed a tough decision for everyone, we all agree that it is the right decision for the future of the program and for Sean.

"I appreciate the professional way in which Sean and Mike addressed the situation and I am pleased they arrived at a mutual decision on how we should move forward. We appreciate Sean's professionalism and I know everyone joins me in wishing him only the best in the future."

"I want the fans and my OSU family to know how much I have appreciated their support over the last 17 years," Sean Sutton said. "It has been a great experience and I have loved every minute of my time here at OSU. I also want to thank our players, coaches and entire staff for all their hard work and support.

"My family and I will always have fond memories of OSU and I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this great program and this great university."

Lou Watkins, chair of the OSU/A&M board of regents, said, "While we respect the decision, we nevertheless admire the work of Sean and Eddie to restore OSU basketball to national prominence. We know this is a difficult time for Sean and for OSU, but we are confident under the leadership of our president and VP of athletics (Holder), OSU will find the right person to lead our program. In the meantime, we wish Sean only the very best in the future."

The traditions no longer matter at OSU thanks to Boone Pickens. This guy actually thinks money can buy national championships or NCAA tourney's? If they are going to fire Sean they should have asked Gundy to leave too. Gundy's tradition as a QB by no means makes him qualified to be a head coach of a Div 1 school Football program. Sean at least, has grown up around it, played in it and pretty much knows what's expected. Sure, 2 mediocre seasons...but come on, fire him?
How about getting him good players who want to learn and play OSU basketball? The players on the squad now are playing some sort of retarded street ball. Not Sutton B-ball!
Holder, fire yourself or take your offer to work for free. Please.

We took a big step towards joining OU yesterday. MH has taken our once proud tradition of playing well, representing OSU well and whether you win or lose -the Cowboy faithful will support our teams and players. Now we're with the "just win baby" crowd. Disgusting.

I just caught Holder's comments on video. What a laugh! "We've got Cowboy ethics!" "Let's all saddle up and Ride for the Brand!" I can't believe that he could stand there and say things like that with a straight face, but I guess when T-Boone is pulling your strings, you can do just about anything. Hilarious!

This sucks. I have faith in Sean. Mike Holder made a big mistake by firing him. Watch Sean go to Colorado to coach and then they start beating us every year.

whoever hired holder was real stupid, a golf coach. sean should have been given the opportunity to least finish or come close to his contract. yes, hargis should have stepped in and done something. my feelings is that sean with what he had done good and would have done great as time went on.besides this is going to hurt our recruiting. like i said a few months ago, holder is a a##hole and a snob. if you arent rich or a contributor to osu,you wont be noticed by him and make you feel inferior and you are useless. this will come back and haunt osu and holder is the main blame.

This had to hurt Mike Holder quite a bit. I can't imagine how much it hurts to have all of your strings pulled like that for such a long press conference. Boone is a great puppet master.

Sorry Joe, it was Leonard Hamilton who had the excuses of a young team.

Who did Boone Pickens tell Holder to hire? It's time to get rid of Mike Holder!I think OSU is going backwards instead of forward with their athletic program.

What does a guy who chases and looks for a white ball in a cow pasture know about Basketball? Holder sucks bigtime. Boone, you need to fire Holder and bring Sean back today.

Holder is the one that should have gone. Sean will coach another Big 12 team and whip Oswhoo every year.

Actually they did him a favor because he might start talking like old coach OSU once had, I think his name was Robinson, a black guy and he always said, year after year that he had a young team and needed time.

Fired?..I felt the only resson Sean ever got the job was due to his name it wasnt due to his basketball talents, sure hes only been head coach what two years but has been apart of the basketball program for what 17 years, his name got him the job not his experiences and it shows and thats why he goes.

Um....I'm against the firing and all, but fire Hargis too? Are you crazy? The guy has been on the job for like 3 weeks, oh, and OSU is a UNIVERSITY, not a professional franchise. There is more to a school than a divisive firing of an athletics coach.

Something else i think might have been in play here. Look at what Coach Capel and OU did in two years vs. what Sean and OSU did in the last two. But I do think this was the right decision. Sean had no bullet points in his short resume, and none coming in the form of a huge recruit.

As an OU fan I can only say you guys are right. They should fire Holder and Hargis. Then they need to bring back Sean, give him 15 or 20 years to get it right if he can't do it in that time, give him 5 or 10 more years. While your at it fire your Women's basket ball coach. All he's doing is making Sean look bad and you all sure don't need that.

2 seasons and the guy gets the shaft. Heck, I'm an OU alum and I can see that crap. Something else is going on because Sutton Jr. never had a real opportunity.

Lest we forget. OSU did much more for the Suttons than the Suttons did for OSU. Eddie couldn't have gotten a job anywhere in the country after Kentucky, except OSU. They both did OK, then both failed. I feel sorry for both but they had a good ride and OSU gave them a great opportunity.

A watershed moment for Oklahoma State athletics. No longer any doubt, it is a business. To survive in the Big 12, it has to be. No more talk of "family". It is a high-performance team. And if you aren't pulling your weight, (which Sean Sutton wasn't) you are off the high-performance team. The business analyis isn't my own. It is a direct quote from a President of a large company which for decades had considered itself "family". CEO Robert Lane of John Deere. Significant money, and I mean significant money, is coming out after this drama for a new coach and Cowboy Nation is moving on.

Sean got screwed. And I'm an OU fan. They never gave him a chance.
elizabeth, Springfield - Apr 1, 2008 at 8:14 pm
I think this decision was premature as I don't think Coach Sutton was provided an adequate opportunity, and certainly not the same as the football coach. I just hope AD Holder's decision pays immediate dividends with the success of the next coach because if OSU just pushed out Gary Gibbs, they best hope they don't get Howie Schnellenberger following. The next coach's success may dictate the fate of Mr. Holder.

To the Gundy haters out there, at least Mike has won back to back post-season games. If Sean had been able to win even one NIT game (see Miami, Mairst & S. Illinois) maybe he would still have a job

As far as I'm concerned, Mike Holder's stock just went up about 1000%. I know that the decision to replace Sean was not an easy one, but a decision that was made for the good of the program. This isn't a game of personalities, it big time Division I basketball. A coach that can demonstrate he's capable of winning has the opportunity to live in a great city like Stillwater and make a great living. Those that can't get fired and go somewhere else. That's the law of the jungle. Period.
