Discover Oklahoma: Automotive enthusiasts find action

With thousands of hot rods invading Oklahoma City streets for the Southwest Street Rod Nationals, your automotive enthusiast genes may have perked up. If shining paint, glittering chrome and brushed aluminum wheels get your motor running, this is your time of year. You can find car shows, cruises, poker runs, and races taking place every weekend all across Oklahoma.

The second annual Duncan High School Soccer Booster Club Car Show will take place April 12 at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. This indoor event will feature many makes and models of cars and trucks, including imports, domestics, muscle cars and sports cars. You'll even find a generous helping of motorcycles and lowriders. With concessions on site and live bands performing, there is plenty of good stuff for your eyes, ears and stomach. On April 18-19, Catch the Fever Music Festivals will present Bikelahoma at its campgrounds near Pryor. Attractions will include the Globe of Death, the Wall of Death, Speed for Hire, a tractor pull, Angie Land and the Flaunt Girls Burlesque Show. Touting itself as a motorcycle festival along the lines of that in Sturgis, S.D., Bikelahoma has numerous bands scheduled to perform including Jackyl, Kentucky Head Hunters, Bang Tango and at least a dozen more. The site features more than 4,000 campsites, on-site parking, bathroom facilities and a convenience store. Parking and camping during Bikelahoma will be free to the public. Need a little racing action? The State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City has what you need with races every Friday night. Super sprints, championship sprints, pro-stocks, factory stocks and USA modifieds compete. Tickets for regular Friday night shows are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, $2 for children and free for children younger than 5. Gates open at 5 p.m., and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. On April 18 and July 11, the State Fair Speedway will host a demolition derby, with destructiveness sure to satisfy young and old alike. Racers and race fans also should check out Thunder Valley Raceway Park in Noble. With Test & Tune and Grudge racing from 6 p.m. to midnight Fridays, you can race your ride all evening for just $15. Tickets for Friday night spectators are $8. Saturday racing begins at 4 p.m., with spectator tickets costing $10.50. On May 2, Thunder Valley Raceway Park will present the Pro Street Shoot Outs. If those sound a little too loud or wild, then check out Cruisin' the Chisholm Trail in Duncan on April 19. With a car cruise, poker run, kids car show, hamburger feed and Johnny Cooper concert, this event is sure to please. A custom bike will be given away during the event. The show begins at 9:30 a.m., and the cruise and poker run start at 12:30 p.m. The hamburger feed will start at 4:15 p.m., and the Johnny Cooper concert will begin at 6 p.m. For more information, call (580) 252-8696 or go online to www.mainstreetduncan.com

On May 2-3, the Rock and Rumble Car Show and Cruise will be at the Jackson County Courthouse in Altus. The show will begin at 8 p.m. May 2 with an open cruise and live outdoor entertainment. On May 3, viewing begins at 8 a.m., and a burnout contest is at 10 a.m. Bring your earplugs for the "sound off” stereo competition at 11 a.m., then turn your attention to the live outdoor entertainment beginning at noon. If you are looking for something a little different, check out the Tulsa ArtCar Weekend on May 15-18 in Tulsa. Stimulate your visual senses at the most unusual car show in Oklahoma, held in conjunction with Blue Dome Arts Festival. Enjoy a parade of vehicles that have been transformed into works of art. Featuring vehicles you won't see anywhere else, ArtCar Weekend brings in mobile creations from artists from across the United States. The Woodward Rodders Rod Run and Car Show will be May 24-25. This 26th annual event features two days of fun and games for all ages. Attractions include a burnout competition, cruise, poker run, vendors and more than 300 vehicles. For more information, call (580) 334-2165.

On June 6-8, El Reno will be the location of "A Small Town Weekend on Route 66.” With a concert Friday night, children's games, festival foods, classic car show, live entertainment, hot wheel races and a legal Route 66 burnout, this event has it all. A block party kicks things off at 6 p.m. June 6. Hot Wheels races are at 9 a.m. June 7, with the burnout to follow at noon. The open car show will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 8 in Adams Park. Admission is free. For more information call (405) 262-3876.
