A Moore senator has filed an amendment to legislation in the Senate to revive the campus handgun bill, it was learned Wednesday.

Sen. Anthony Sykes, R-Moore, wants to amend House Bill 2606 on peeping Toms to allow military veterans and others with firearms training to carry concealed weapons on any public college or university property.

Last week the co-chairmen of the Senate Appropriations Committee refused to hear another bill with this same language.

Educators fight effort
Higher education supporters have mobilized to fight this latest effort to allow firearms on college campuses, said Kathryn Jones, executive director of the Higher Education Alumni Council.

College presidents met at the state Capitol last week to voice concerns about the bill that eventually was killed.

University of Oklahoma President David Boren said last week that in 41 years of public service, he had not seen legislation "that would bring with it more unintended consequences that can lead to tragedy.”

True tim, but if the bill is the same amended bill that passed the house than the persons who would carry have to have 72 hours of CLEET training (Armed Security Guard). So, it wouldn't be just any random frat student It would be someone with some real live fire training and qualification to simlar standards you have.

Giving concealed carry owners the green light to bring guns on campus isn't going to keep people from dying if someone comes onto campus and starts shooting, someone is going to die before someone else can end it. The point that most people are missing is how soon can the threat be eliminated in order to minimize the number of casualties? I'd say pretty quickly, if the bill passes, but people will still die. The sooner the threat can be eliminated the better off everyone will be. At the same time, I'm not for allowing just anyone to carry weapons on campus. I carry a firearm on campus because I'm a police officer and student, and I wouldn't want a lot of students getting in the way if I had to react quickly and know without a doubt who the target is. I don't think there is a perfect solution for this. I don't think the universities are any more at risk than 15 years ago when I was working on my bachelor’s degree. Free tuition for law enforcement officers would ensure a rapid response to an active shooter situation and also ensure the students don't complicate things.

This is nuts. You'd think everyone has been watching Wild West movies all day. Having every frat boy packing heat would make things safer on campus? I don't think so. Besides, the last thing any police officer called to confront a shooter on campus (an event which is extremely rare, mind you) would want is to be confronted with a bunch of people waving guns around. Do the bad guys where t-shirts that identify who they are?

We all know "Gun Free Zones" are invitations to psychos. But why should the rest of us become their victims? Allow any and all concealed licensed holders to enter, attend, and if need be...respond with force. The police will only be there after it happens. And I've yet to hear of any officers entering a building without major backup and effecting an end.. BEFORE the shooter did. Concealed holders are disciplined. Emotional anti-gun nanny's are not. History has proven that fact.

How does shooting a killer lead to tragedy? The killer caused the tragedy not the "concealed carrier" guy or gal who blows the killer away before he kills other students. Screw David Boren. His legislation has lead to more unintended consequences than this life saving bill.

Ronald, that's crazy. The police aren't going to wait for a suspect to run out of ammo or kill himself before they storm the building. Since the Columbine shootings, the police have trained for "active shooter" situations in which the first officer on scene waits for a backup and then they enter the building. In the end, I think the answer for all of this is free tuition for active and retired law enforcement officers. It puts more law enforcement officers on campus to help provide safety and also increased the education level and professionalism of law enforcement. It might also help recruit higher quality applicants. All law enforcement agencies have been struggling to recruit enough quality applicants lately.

Military veterans like Charles Whitman? Fantastic idea.

I attend UCOK and it was debated the other night. The current university plan is to jump out the window. Only problem is, we were on the second floor. I hope that it passes because if an incident happens the police will not storm the building. They will surround it and wait until the person runs out of ammo or kills himself. How many people will bleed to death waiting for help.

Great. Good to see that once more the clowns have been put in charge of the asylum. What an asinine move.
