State Fair will stand pat
State Fair Speedway officials say no additional safety precautions will be made for the remainder of the 2008 season. Sprint cars at State Fair Speedway are required to use a bladder inside the fuel cell at the back of the race car. The bladder holds the fuel and helps prevent fire in case the fuel cell is punctured in a crash. The mini-sprint, which caught fire Saturday at I-44 Speedway and severely burned driver Harli White, did not have a bladder in the fuel cell.

State Fair Speedway promoter Lanny Edwards said he would meet with his crew today to ensure they are aware of all safety precautions.

"We are going to have a little meeting to make sure all the bottles are full and make sure they know what to do,” Edwards said. "We hardly ever have a fire.”

State Fair Speedway has won national safety awards.

•Outlaws in town: The American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region will race tonight at State Fair Speedway. The ASCS, either its National or Sooner circuits, will stop at State Fair Speedway four more times before the end of the season Aug. 31.

•Big nights: Drivers Michelle Decker and Steve Smith both finished in the top three in two different events last week at State Fair Speedway. Decker won the super sprints A feature and finished runner-up in the champ sprints A feature. Smith won the USA Modified feature and was third in the pro stocks A feature.
