In his first day on job, Ford sends perfect message

By Berry Tramel

STILLWATERTravis Ford started talking about OSU basketball history, beginning with Hank Iba, of course, and then you wondered where he would go.

You hoped he would drift to Eddie Sutton, because there's no other place to go, and maybe if the new regime embraces the old, the wounds can start to heal.

And just like everything else Ford did Thursday, he aced the test.

"I'm a big believer in tradition,” Ford had said, no great surprise for a son of Kentucky. "I studied the game tremendously. It's special to me to be a part of the program that Coach Iba started. What he meant to not just Oklahoma State but to basketball.”

Ford soon enough will learn that it's "Mister” Iba to everyone around these parts, but never mind. The most important thing was coming next. Would Ford pull a Howard Schnellenberger — who when named football coach at Oklahoma lauded Bud Wilkinson but ignored Barry Switzer — and not duly honor those who made this job worth having in the first place?

No. OSU's new coach is too sharp for such a grievous error. His next words were the olive branch Cowboy basketball needed.

"The foundation the Sutton family has put on this program, I want to build on that,” Ford said. "A great, great basketball family and great people.”

Boy, did OSU need that. Needed two things, really: Mike Holder to hire a top-notch coach and for someone to reach out to the aggrieved Suttons, the closest thing this campus has to royalty.

Check and check.

"Great day to be a Cowboy,” Holder said Thursday in Gallagher-Iba Arena, and who could argue? Promise and optimism seemed to return to OSU hoops in the wake of Ford's introduction. Who knows how Ford will fare, but hope carried this day.

How different from the last time we all gathered in the O Club, 16 days earlier for the beheading of Sean Sutton, the crown prince turned endangered king.

"Tough day to be a Cowboy,” Holder said then, and again, no argument. Those who supported the House of Sutton were outraged, and those who supported a change were saddened.

But Thursday, it was easy to believe that OSU had entered a much-needed new day. Ford was everything you want in a basketball hire. Personable, determined, focused.

New blood can be a very good thing. Sometimes, a transfusion is just what an organization needs, and truth is, OSU hoops more than qualify.

It's politically prudent to talk up your new boss, and Cowboy players did just that. But their words had the ring of truth.

"I like it,” Terrel Harris said of the hire. "Seems really livelier. Nice atmosphere.”

Byron Eaton said, "He made a great impression on most of the guys. He said, ‘Guys, you're going to have fun.' I don't think the guys had fun last year.”

Harris gave Ford a 9 on a scale of 1-10 — didn't say who would be a 10 — and then said the most interesting thing all day.

"I remember when I first got here and we had Eddie Sutton,” Harris said. "Whenever he talked, people just listened.”

And with Ford?

"I don't know if it's strong voice or what it is, but when he talked, people listened,” Harris said. "My teammates were really interested and were really focused on everything he had to say. Every word.”

There is no doubt that Sean Sutton's authority had waned, and the return of authority will be a good thing for OSU. A very good thing.

But that doesn't mean the Sutton era — Eddie and Sean, no reason to differentiate — shouldn't be celebrated.

"I have a great admiration for the Sutton family,” Ford said. "I'd love for them to be involved. They've meant so much to this university.”

Involvement will take time, a long time, but this is a good first step.

Ford has a history with the Suttons. As a high school senior in Madisonville, Ky., in 1988-89, Ford was recruited by Sutton's Kentucky staff but wasn't offered a scholarship.

For good reason. Kentucky at that time had a roster loaded with point guards: freshmen Sean Woods and Richie Farmer, plus sophomore starter Sean Sutton. Woods and Farmer went on to become Kentucky stalwarts.

So Ford went to Missouri. When Eddie Sutton resigned a year later amid NCAA scandal and Sean transferred out, Kentucky found a scholarship for Ford.

Now, almost 20 years later, Ford again uproots his life to fill a void left by Sean.

Thursday, Ford kept talking about winning NCAA championships in Stillwater, which is what a coach is supposed to do.

And here's some historical bullets in his holster. The last two times a coach replaced the House of Sutton — Nolan Richardson at Arkansas and Rick Pitino at Kentucky — a Final Four came within five years and a national title within 10.

No one outside of Ford is predicting NCAA championships. But such optimism is possible because of the Suttons.

"One thing that attracted me is what they've done,” Ford said. "I want to continue to grow on that foundation.”

Swell of Ford to recognize that. Even sweller of him to say it on this great day to be a Cowboy.

David....if this guy (Travis Ford) is such a poor choice, then why would Kentucky hire him in 2 years?
This is a sooner fan who wishes the best for this young coach and his players.

First of all you spell whiner like this. I have always loved Stillwater but I am not lecturung anyone, however, when fire someone you usually want to improve, With the Ford Guy I see no improvement except that the Media and "Homer Blevins" like him. He better act fast because in two year he will be coaching at Kentucky and we will be looking for another Basketball coach. Maybe then Scott Sutton will be ready to come home, maybe Brooks Thompson or Corey Williams. Leonard Hamilton will be able soon.

at lot of the new things put out by OSU like the to the bone comment kinda bother me. But the one making the rounds now says it all, I ride for the Brand. And quite by accident I was born Oklahomanand proud of it, I am Cowboy by magical design. My brand is OSU. and I went to college when Sam was our Coach ( as well as Mr. Iba).

David, yes I know EXACTLY who Sam Aubrey is, I knew him personally when I was growing up in Stillwater and he was Mister Iba's assistant coach. So don't lecture us on your "support" of the team between the Iba and Sutton years. I supported them, too, and will always support OSU. I love Stillwater even though I don't live there anymore, and love OSU. I couldn't change that even if I wanted to, certainly not over the choice of a coach. How totally SHALLOW. You don't have any idea who Travis Ford is, or anything about him but you trash him? Good riddance, we don't want you on our side! And YES, you are indeed a FAIR-WEATHER FAN !!!!!

Not to pile on, but I don't get it either David. I for one think it's a solid hire and that he has a chance to do well for us. But even if you disagree with the decision that Holder made and for some reason have taken a dislike to Ford, what about the players? They work their tails off practically year 'round, practice, go to class, and everything else that goes into being a D-1 student-athlete and they had absolutley nothing to do with who was fired and hired. Aren't the players the ones that deserve our support, whether or not you support Holder or the rest of the OSU administration?

Hey you guys, leave David the winer alone. Let him go root for OU that have a bunch of winers. Remember all the OU winers that surfaced after their loss to Boise State. Even OSU people think that Stoops is a good coach, but he has his dregs too.

David, I was a freshman in '68. Using names of past coaches is just a cop out. You either support your university or you don't. You're just giving excuses. You sound like you want Ford to fail. If that is true, you need to go away and stay away. You're no supporter of OSU anymore.

Great post James. Remember two years ago Coach Capel wasent the big name hire that most OU fans wanted. Look what he did in year 2 and we can expect more of that in years to come. No I dont mean 2nd round knockouts I mean deep runs into the dance.

To say the least, I am intrigued by OSU's hire. Regardless, it's time for us, alumni and fans, to put away the complaints and get behind the guy. He's OUR guy, let's be HIS fans! Let the Ford era begin!!!

David, whether you admit it or not, you ARE a "fair weather fan." Good grief, Coach Ford hasn't even started and you've already tarred and feathered him!!!
If you're not even going to give the guy a chance...get the hell out of Dodge!!! There's a line of people who want your ticket!!

I supported this team before Eddie came home. I toughed it out with Leonard Hamilton, Paul Hansen and yes even Guy Strong. Does anybody even know who Sam Aubrey is? I used to see Mr. Iba everyday when I worked as a student manager so don't anyone call me a Fair Weather Fan". I am done with this "Ford" Guy.

Perfect.. Tramel is acting more and more like Jenni Carlson. He was studdering, and making a lot of unrealistic promises. The more I think about it Holder and OSU made a quick decision that I see as a longshot to work out. If he doesn't impress on the court soon he may never make it to Kentucky. Maybe Eastern or Western Kentucky. I doubt UMASS is the pressure cooker the job he just took is. These fans want a lot, and after 3 year of NIT enough is enough. Patience is running out quickly in Cowboy country.

Good article, but the "for the beheading of Sean Sutton" comment was a poor choice of wording. It was nothing close to a beheading. OSU made Coach Sean a wealthy man and made the best out of what it (or at least Holder)thought was a bad situation. Sean Sutton may not be where he wants to be but he still has great opportunity out there and finances shouldn't be an issue for him.

David, how stupid you are!! You are the Kind of Fan that No team wants!!! Only go for the winning team and run and hide when there is trouble. By the way, we have two of the top Golfers in the Nation at OSU! Maybe you should be a Sooner, but i doubt they even want you!!

I will no longer support the Cowboys after 35 years. They have hired a Car Salesman who will be gone as soon as Billy Gillespie is fired. I will support the Sonics instead once they move here to OKC. It is incredulous what Holder has done to our Once Proud Basketball and Baseball Teams. Even his golf team sucks now. I may be hard but I might even root for Jeff Capel and the Sooners.
