Q: How did Kody Spano fare during Nebraska's spring practices? — Paul, Edmond.

A: Spano's story became headline news when he signed with Nebraska after being committed to the Cowboys for nearly a year.

Told by OSU coaches he might not be able to participate in spring practice because of a scholarship crunch, Spano opted to sign with the Cornhuskers even though a scholarship opened up which would have allowed him to arrive early in Stillwater.

Spano ended spring the same place he started – the No. 4 quarterback on NU's depth chart.

"There's a lot being thrown at him,” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini told the Lincoln Star Journal. "He's improving every day. That's all you can ask for. He's behind the other guys because he doesn't have as many reps or as much knowledge.”

Pelini, though, said Spano reporting early will benefit him in the long run. "He's able to learn from his mistakes, learn in the classroom,” Pelini said. "He's going to be a lot further ahead because of it.”

Now that spring practice is over, what positions are still up in the air?

Left guard is the biggest question mark. Jonathan Rush and Michael Booker alternated with the first-team offense. Andrew Lewis could move back to left guard after moving to center last season following David Washington's broken leg injury.

Incoming freshman Quinn Sharp is expected to earn the place-kicking job but doesn't arrive on campus until June and must win the job during two-a-days.

Another summer arrival is Donald Booker, a junior college transfer who recorded 161 tackles last season at Navarro (Texas) Junior College. How quickly Booker adapts during two-a-days could have a ripple effect at linebacker.

A few players currently listed on the second team could challenge for starting jobs during two-a-days. That's actually a good sign that OSU's depth is improving since few, if any, starters are viewed as a weak link.
