Oklahoma State freshman Rickie Fowler has been named to the 2008 U.S. Palmer Cup squad, it was announced Monday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The annual
Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-27 on the 6,903-yard, par-71 Glasgow Golf Club Gailes Links and will match the top collegiate players from the
United States against their counterparts from
Europe.
Fowler, who was named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2008
Ben Hogan Award last week, has competed in eight tournaments for the
Cowboys this season, finishing in the top 10 in each start. He leads the squad with a 70.46 stroke average and has been ranked No. 1 nationally for a good portion of the season.
The selection of the
Murrieta,
Calif., native to the team marks the seventh consecutive year a
Cowboy has competed in the event and the 11th time overall.
Fowler will be joined on the squad by
Kevin Chappell of
UCLA, Louisville's
Derek Fathauer,
San Diego State's
Aaron Goldberg,
Chesson Hadley of
Georgia Tech,
Florida's Billy Horschel,
Adam Mitchell of
Georgia and
Alabama's
Michael Thompson.
Stanford's
Conrad Ray will serve as the team's captain.
Last year's victorious U.S. team was captained by OSU head coach
Mike McGraw and also included former Cowboy Jonathan Moore, who finished with a 3-1-0 mark in the event. The Americans lead the series 6-4-1 but have lost the last two competitions in Europe.
