Famed Ferris wheel set for city

Oklahoma City developer Grant Humphreys bought a piece of Americana on Ebay Friday — the Pacific Park Ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier — and intends to bring it back home and include it in a future project.

The nine-story-tall Ferris wheel has 20 gondolas, 5,400 light bulbs, and the California amusement park reports it has been featured in 28 movies and more than 130 television shows and commercials. The amusement is being replaced by a newer, bigger wheel, and part of the proceeds from the sale is being contributed to Special Olympics.

"It's a movie star,” Humphreys said.

The Ebay sale ended Friday with Humphreys' winning bid of $132,400. Humphreys, reached while vacationing with his family, said he is planning to take his wife and children to Santa Monica next week to take a ride while it is still on the famous pier.

Dismantling and relocation to Oklahoma will follow soon after.

"We don't have a specific place decided for it, but we think it's a great classic Ferris wheel and a great part of nostalgic Americana,” he said.
