Oklahoma City's NBA team might just be named the Sonics after all — if the readers voting in The Oklahoman's name bracket have anything to say about it.

But just barely.

In the closest result of the second round of the voting, the Sonics, a No. 2 seed, beat the Pioneers 258-254, a margin of four votes.

The rest of the second round was wild, with double-digit seeds getting through in all four regionals and solid names like the Black Gold, Mustangs, Energy and Tornadoes going down.

Here's the Sweet 16 matchups:

Alvan Adams Regional
•(1) Twisters vs. Bison (4): Bison put a plug in Black Gold. Texas Tea and Bubbling Crude could not be reached for comment.

• (11) Rattlers vs. Thunder (2): Thunder got the most votes out of the regional, not the Twisters juggernaut.

Wayman Tisdale Regional
(1) Barons vs. (4) Lightning: Kasey Moody's sweet illustration has given the Barons a leg up. Black and gold the way to go.

• (11) Roughriders vs. (2) Sonics: Roughriders torpedoed the Mustangs. Sweet mascot idea — Inflatable Teddy Roosevelt.

Chris Paul Regional
(1) Thunderbirds vs. (4) Boomers: This is the matchup of the tournament so far — a quality nickname vs. OU fandom.

• (6) Coyotes vs. (10) Navigators: Navigators benefit from fans bailing on Scissortails. Really, though, Navigators?

Desmond Mason Regional
• (1) Outlaws vs. (5) Cyclones: Outlaws recall Oklahoma's stint in the USFL. In 1984, that team went 6-12. Aim high.

• (11) Renegades vs. (2) Stallions: Stallions holding strong. Sweet mascot idea — Inflatable Rocky Balboa.

yo grant from edmond, evidently you are not a veteran. our national guard is name the 45th thunderbirds and they were the greatest guard unit in the usa. patton called them the greatest soldiers he ever commanded and the group as a whole were the most decorated guard unit than any other. they had 9 medal of honor winners and numerous dsm's and many silvers and bronze besides purple hearts. i theink the thunderbirds would be fitting for oklahoma. since you live so close to okc you ought to go to the 45th museum at 36th and mlk. you will get a good feeling about them and our veterans of oklahoma. 45th kicked butt.

Has anyone brought up the name, "Oklahoma City Natives?" Most of our car tags say NATIVE AMERICA. Our capitol building is crested by a Native American. A popular ad campaign describes Oklahoma as, "America in its Native state." Plus what sounds cooler than "The Natives are Getting Restless" Also the word native doesn't always have to refer to American Indians it can also refer to people from a certain geographical area. Maybe this name can enter the playoffs as a wildcard? Thanks!

Thank you Michael...I know I'm outspoken on many issues, but I do strive to convey my thoughts properly, and I pride myself on my use of the English language. I'm sure the "fake Paul" wouldn't dare challenge me one on one, mainly because he/she would be at an extreme disadvantage even if I was in the middle of an epileptic seizure at the time....

Nick..wake up. Thats not me doing those posts. If you follow my posts, and I see you do, then you'd know that those ramblings are from some ignorant person who wishes he was as literate as I. Other posters on other threads have already acknowledged that this "false Paul" can't be one and the same, but thanks for playing anyway....

Why is every other trailer park I've ever driven passed had the name "Thunderbird" on their sign?

The only people that live here are, inbreds, rednecks and I do not think I have actually met anyone with IQ over 50.It is the worst state in the nation. No one has a full set of teeth and they all sleep with there relatives if a sheep is not available. If I could move I would. OKLAHOMA SUCKS!!!" See? Sleep with "there" sheep? Nicely done fella.

The Boz is the only one that loves Seattle. He got rich quick, with very little effort.

Paul, stop trying to speak with intelligence, and stop being so negative. You don't even know the difference between their, there, and they're. Thank you, good bye.

Sorry Chris..this is somebody without near my fluency in the written language, and is making the paltry attempt to mimick me in an attempt to sway more people against me....and only a select few are buying it.....

Good God people, let not turn this into a Seattle vs. Oklahoma City thing.I have been to Seattle many times and,I love that I moved here to OKC from New Jersey 7 years ago and,I love living here. Both places are great in there own way.People need to focus more on things that really matter like, the endless war in Iraq
that we never should have gotten into. Our counrty is going down the tubes when it comes to our economy and,our school system in this country sucks...I know people are heated up in both cities but, please lets keep a GAME in perspective.

Oh yeah, Largent HATED Seattle! My cousin's wife was his housekeeper (REALLY) and said his wife and kids LOVED it there and hated leaving. Steve loved the city but did miss the midwest and like most Seattle area types had a love-hate relationship with the weather. I think the fact he applied for the Seahawks job speaks volumes.
Leonard, Houston - May 6, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Can't use OKC Storm, that might mean you approve of that "gay" team, the Seattle Storm! God forbid!

Largent hated Seattle so much he applied for the GM job with the Seahawks. He hated Seattle so much he moved from Oklahoma City to Washington DC. By the way, Desmond Mason, one of the brackets, lives in Seattle.

My cousin Steve Largent hated Seattle.

Breaking news folks: The judge today ruled that Bennett can not combine the two legal issues meaning that even if he wins the case to break the lease there will be another trial to determine how large the damages he would have to pay would be should he choose to break the lease. That ends any chance of the team moving for this upcoming season meaning that the relocation approval will expire and he will have to re-apply at some point if he still owns the team and wants to try to move it again.
Karma, OKC - May 6, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Wow so much negativity over the name of a basketball team. Really?!! Please don’t use the name pioneers! Not cool at all. How about the Stampede? Or OKC STORM? Just not the Pioneers!
Michael, Dallas - May 6, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I hate to break this to you folks but you won't be getting the Sonics at all but even if you did the name will never go with it. At some point in the legal process Clay will have no choice but to give up the name and history to negotiate his way out of something. Even if that didn't happen there would be an eminent domain case filed to take it away from him so you can be sure he is not going to put any effort into keeping it.
Karma, OKC - May 6, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Don't go with "Thunderbirds." If they can't be the "Indians" then why is an Indian reference OK? Because Thunderbirds isn't offensive? Neither is Chiefs. Unless you chose to take is offensively. So, let's just make it easy. Don't go with "Thunderbirds."
