Final Four flipped on its head as upsets run riot

Published: May 15, 2008

The people have spoken, and it's a stunner. The two NBA team nicknames that seemed to be cruising to the finals of The Oklahoman's Name Game both lost in the Final Four.

Out: Barons and Thunderbirds.

In: Thunder and Outlaws.

Votes for the finals will begin at 9 a.m. today and run through noon Friday. The top name will be revealed in Sunday's editions of The Oklahoman.

The voting was close — Thunder, the remaining No. 2 seed, beat Barons, 190-148. Outlaws bested Thunderbirds 182-160.

More than 1,000 people have registered to vote in the contest since it began on April 28.

Today, we take a look at the two finalists and what they bring to the table.

Phillip, were you talking about me?? Girls running to the moderator?? I hope not... because it wasn't me... or were you referring to "girls" as in men on here???
And Adam.. I have a job... but unlike you I also have a life and have other things to do at 9 or 10 pm... so get a life and have a nice one... I'm done talking to you and about Tex-ass!!! SEE YA!!

Phillip, I hope less than 23 show up. What better way to prove what a flimsy ship Bennett is perched on when only 23 Spartans can cause this much of a headache for Bennett and Stern.

Phillip, The SOS core leadership are the primary people that will attend. If it were not for SOS the team would be selling tickets in OKC already. There are plenty of ways people are fighting to keep this team. However, Clay has really put himself and Stern in a tight pickle....When he loses in court...how many will attend the S.O.B. meetings....Save Our Bennett!!

Too bad. Robber Barons was the best choice. It would be ironic if Thunderbirds was the choice since that is the name of Seattle's hockey team. Anyhow, it is a good diversion to play the name game even if you don't have a team to name.

Texas is supposed to be stuck up? From what I just read I would say NYC is tops in that department.
Ryan, Coweta - May 15, 2008 2:33 PM.................... You make a good point, but NYC has much more reason to be proud than Texas. It's one of the worlds "model" cities (it sets standards), NYC has made vast environmental improvements, it is socially welcoming to all walks of life, etc... Maybe you haven't been there, you should go... you will be surprised how friendly and exciting it can be. Walk around Manhattan for a day, then walk around Dallas or Houston... I know you will then agree, NYC is a great place... Dallas and Houston, not completely horrible, but not as great as Texans want to believe.

Wow... Adam is on such a defensive streak now... resorting to calling people idiots and making juvenile jokes about Oklahoma. Pathetic. In fact... Adam... I am not an "Okie".... I am a born and raised Brooklyn boy, Italian and Irish and from a long line of NYPD officers... the best police force in the country if you ask me. Every one of them would rather die than spend a week in Texas, but enjoy their visits to Oklahoma because people around here don't try and act so big and arrogant... just laid back and friendly. Oklahoma has its limitations and "Okies" will admit that, but at least they are nice people who are willing and working to make things better around here. They genuinely love their land around here and I have enjoyed every minute of my life since moving to OKC. Texas is the bully of the U.S. and arrogant Texans can brag about their state all they want... but the improvements Texas has been making are the equivalent of giving the Hunchback a nosejob... makes no difference... still a hunchback. Texas has no heart and is nothing but a bunch of corporate whores. It's a big stinking mess down there and is holding on by a golden thread... it will break and Texans will get back everything they have dished out, not just to Oklahoma, but to the rest of the country.

What Adam doesn't realize is... most places around the world roll their eyes when someone says they are from Texas. There is some relief when they say Austin which is an anomally in Texas, but Texans are not well respected or liked around the world. They tend to be "overly proud of their arrogant ignorance"--- as Kathy Griffin put it so perfectly. We, here in Oklahoma, have long been adored by much of the world... people like Will Rogers, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), etc... are all well-adored and loved by most . Texas gave us the Bush's... so as proud as Texas wants to be, they don't hold much water any longer. Dallas and especially Houston are overgrown suburbs with no real character and Houston also is one of America's most polluted cities. Galveston Bay is disgusting and the air in many parts of Houston smells like rotting eggs. Dallas is so pretentious it is humorous... considering themselves of NYC quality(where I am from) but in reality they lack any coherence as a real city and aside from some nice architecture have little to offer. I can go on about Texas all day, I think New Yorkers may be the only ones in America who can't stand Texans more than the Okies can't stand them. Texas is a big, loud, arrogant joke.

The best two were Thunder and Barons. One of them had to win. Thunderbirds is too clunky. I'm surprised I like Thunder. Usually I hate team names that don't end in an 's,' but Thunder sounds pretty good... it's at least as good as "Heat" and "Magic." Outlaws doesn't have a prayer in the NBA, as they try desperately to downplay their thug, wanna be gangsta image. Black and gold are good colors, but it would be easy to have a cheezy jersey with a name like "Thunder" so they'll have to watch that. I'm not sure black and gold go with Thunder. If they use white strategically, that could look really good if the rest of the jersey is dark. Like a tiny sliver of silver against dark blue-grey thunder clouds. Or the white top of an ominous thunder cloud. It could work... it just can't be cheezy.

I spoke to David Stern on Tuesday, he said "Outlaws" has no chance as that is a stigma that the NBA actively tries to squash. After thinking about it- the Thunder might be a cool name, but they should try to incorporate some stuff in the logo, ala Minnesota Wild, where you can see some other things too- Perhaps the silhouette could be of a horse, cowboy, indian, tumbleweed, etc. It could also show some stuff in like an oil derrick, or anything else native to the state.

Phil, newspapers provide both news and entertainment. If you don't like it, don't read it. Get a life.

What a joke of a newspaper. All they can come up with is a dumb-ss contest that means nothing. Now that's sports journalism at it's finest

Guess there are no more pressing issues than this article and the dumb-ss contest the DOK supports. What a joke of a newspaper.
