Let's communicate, but not about everything

This is all about talking dirty, about using unsavory words, about bringing up topics not appropriate to casual conversations.

Or, according to the friend who brought this to my attention, about things we didn't used to introduce in polite company and now see and hear daily on television.

We didn't used to tell everybody about our use of condoms, personal lubricant, birth control or pregnancy tests. When we said "herpes,” we did so in a whisper. We hadn't yet invented the politically correct term "erectile dysfunction” and now we're experts on it.

Now all those terms and conditions are part of our interaction with our TV sets and millions of viewers around the world, and we're not at all embarrassed.

OK, I know this is probably a generational thing, and moral standards have changed, and commercial television isn't polite company. I agree it's better to discuss these matters than to hide them. I'm pleased that scientists have developed products that solve some of our most vexing problems, and some of us want information and access to those products. And I know daytime soap operas are way beyond suggestive, much more so than commercials.

We can all imagine, of course, what they're going to do with those items that allow safe sex. They're going to have sex. I'm all for that, as well; but I hope they don't do it in my living room.

Mind you, I don't object to these products; I'm not judging these medical conditions. But I'm not going to tell you about them when I get them. Sorry, you'll just have to do without that information.

It seems that people believe once a camera is trained on them and a microphone placed in front of their faces, they have to spill something.
