Insects, heat and overwatering are some of the obstacles gardeners face as August nears.

What is crawling around your garden? Here are some beneficial insects and some harmful insects. Besides dealing with insect pests, be sure not to overwater tomatoes. It can cause yellowing of leaves and may spread insects and disease.

Use a soaker hose to keep water off leaves, thus limiting the spread of diseases.

Excess nitrogen fertilizer can create lush green plants but also can hinder fruit set.

Mulching around tomato plants helps retain moisture and stabilize temperature. Avoid direct contact with the stem, as mulch holds moisture. Use two to three inches of wood mulch per plant.

Late summer heat can stress plants. Check for dryness, and if the plants are exposed to hot, dry wind, move them to another location.
