Appendectomy slows defensive star; Anderson leaves team

NORMAN — Oklahoma just got a little thinner at defensive end this preseason.

Defensive end and Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Auston English is out indefinitely after having emergency surgery last weekend to remove his appendix.

English is expected to make a full recovery, but it's unknown when he'll be able to join the team on the practice field. He is expected to be back for the season opener Aug. 30 against Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Also, redshirt freshman defensive end David Anderson has decided to leave the team, his high school coach confirmed Monday.

"David is a good kid, he just doesn't want to play football anymore for whatever reason,” said Ernie Manning, coach at Lawton MacArthur. "I don't know if he's going to take the year off or go somewhere else.”

The good news is that if there's a position the Sooners can afford to lose two players during the preseason, it's defensive end.

English's absence and Anderson's departure means that inexperienced but talented players like redshirt freshman Frank Alexander and incoming freshman R.J. Washington will receive more snaps leading up to the season opener.

OU still has plenty of depth at defensive end, thanks to the return of seniors John Williams and Alan Davis and sophomore Jeremy Beal, who came on strong late last season while English was battling a hairline fracture in his ankle.

The Sooners will hold their first practice next Monday.
