Preparing for WSU tricky
Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Tim Beckman has begun implementing some parts of his game plan for the season opener against Washington State on Aug. 30 in Seattle.

But it's been a trick trying to figure out how to plan for the Cougars, who have a new coaching staff. WSU coach Paul Wulff brought much of his staff with him from Eastern Washington of the NCAA division formerly known as I-AA.

So Beckman is breaking down formations and tendencies of Eastern Washington game tape, while also watching Washington State games to get an idea of the talent of the Cougars' personnel.

"That's really all we have to go from,” Beckman said. "We're trying to prepare for what we believe they'll do.

"(The scout team offense) is giving us a lot of Washington State looks. I thought our effort (in Saturday's scrimmage) was there, and I saw a lot of great execution of the defense.”

•First day of school: Classes begin today at Oklahoma State, so head coach Mike Gundy plans to give the team the day off from practice.

"We'll let the guys find their way around campus and get to all their classes, and not worry about getting over to us for meetings and practice and all that,” Gundy said.

•WSU's kicker search: Washington State coach Paul Wulff recently told the Seattle Times that the Cougars are still "not even close to selecting a kicker.”

Sophomores Wade Penner and Nico Grasu are fighting for the job.
