State wildlife officials keep making it easier for hunters to kill local geese.
In addition to dove season, Oklahoma's resident Canada goose season also opens Monday. Last year the state allowed goose hunters to use unplugged shotguns and electronic calls for the first time. This season the bag limit has been increased from three to five. Geese which reside year-round in Oklahoma have become such a nuisance that state wildlife officials are trying to get more hunters interested in the resident season, which runs through Sept. 10. But most of the nuisance complaints the state Wildlife Department receives about geese are from places where hunting is not allowed — such as city lakes, parks and golf courses — so the resident hunting season has done little to solve that problem. Still, it provides more hunting opportunity. Goose hunters must carry state and federal stamps in addition to a state hunting license, Legacy permit and HIP permit. If you are dove hunting but want to fire at a goose flying overhead, make sure you are shooting steel. Most dove hunters will be slinging lead, which is illegal for goose hunting. And vice-versa, if you are primarily hunting geese but want to do some dove hunting at the same time, make sure your shotgun is plugged.
