Oklahoma City’s NBA team has a nickname, logo and team uniforms.

But what about the mascot?

Thunder fans will have to wait.

“There will not be a mascot at the start of the season,” said team spokesman Dan Mahoney. “It might not be ready until the second half of the season, maybe even after the All-Star break (in February).

“We’re going to take some time to develop it. We want to make sure it’s the right mascot and the design is right. We’re putting a lot of time and thought into it. You don’t get a second chance to do this. You can’t buy an NBA mascot costume off the rack.”

Similar to licensing and trademark issues surrounding the team logo, legal factors are involved.

Asked if the team is concerned some fans will be disappointed to have to wait several months for a mascot, Mahoney said: “The game presentation will still be terrific. Once the mascot is ready it will only add to it.”
