College football’s two premier leagues in 2008 are vastly different. The Big 12 is high-scoring, the Southeastern Conference low-scoring.

One reason is, yes, the SEC plays better defense. No doubt. But how to explain these scores: Tennessee 13, Northern Illinois 9; Louisiana Tech 22, Mississippi State 14; Alabama 20, Tulane 6; South Carolina 23, Wofford 13; Kentucky 20, Middle Tennessee State 14?

The Big 12’s elite squads have no 20-6 finals against rumdums, or anyone else.
