Might he be the best back in the country?

The Cowboys have had six All-American running backs — Bob Fenimore, Terry Miller, Ernest Anderson, Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders and Gerald Hudson — and four of them won national rushing titles.

Hunter could be on his way to becoming the school’s seventh selection. Hunter ranks third nationally in rushing at 143.67 yards per game with a salty 6.9 yards per carry, heading into today’s 2 p.m. Homecoming contest against Baylor at Boone Pickens Stadium.

"He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do, and then some,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "I like him. I don’t know what else is out there, but if we were picking (All-Americans), I’d pick him on my team.”

Truth is, there’s not much out there.

There’s an opening for Hunter, in part because it’s a down year for running backs and most spread offenses are highlighting passers and catchers rather than runners.

Connecticut’s Donald Brown leads the nation in rushing (177.83), followed by Michigan State’s Javon Ringer (158.86).

More familiar names such as Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno and Wisconsin’s P.J. Hill rank 27th and 31st, respectively.

Ringer is averaging an astounding 35.3 carries per game and Brown is averaging 29.8. Hunter is at paltry 20.8.

If he truly wants Hunter to become an All-American, Gundy should start calling his name more often in the huddle.
