An Oklahoma City man was ordered today to pay a $6,500 fine and perform 100 hours of community service for destroying the nests of federally protected cliff swallows at Lake Hefner in June.
Gregory Owen apologized for his June 8 actions, which resulted in the deaths of 187 baby birds.
Owen, 56, pleaded guilty to taking the nest of a cliff swallow, which is protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
He was ordered to perform community service for the Audubon Society of Central Oklahoma or the Friends of Lake Hefner.
His fine will go to the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund.
