A 13-year-old boy who police said was shot through the heart with an arrow by a schoolmate has been released from the hospital.

Jonathan Brainard has been discharged from OU Medical Center, where he was treated for a wound he received after school on Thursday at the northwest Oklahoma City home of Caleb Parham, 14, who was arrested on suspicion for the shooting.

Brainard's mother, Molly Jenkins, said she is extremely grateful her son is alive. She said the arrow broke through his sternum and pierced his heart, and she is thankful to the emergency responders who were called to the scene.

"It was a close call," Jenkins said. "But he he is doing well, and we're just so grateful to the people who saved his life, because they did save his life."

Jenkins said she wanted to thank everyone who offered prayers and support, but she said she was not at liberty to talk about the incident itself and could not elaborate further about her son's injuries.

Parham, who along with Brainard attended Edmond's Summit Middle School, was taken to a juvenile detention center on a complaint of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police said Brainard and Parham were arguing and Parham went into his house and got a compound bow, loaded it, and shot Brainard.
