Divorce may not reduce spousal benefits

Q: I am a 62-year-old woman who was married for almost 30 years before my divorce several years ago.

I expect a relatively small Social Security retirement check, since I mostly worked part-time jobs.

My ex-husband is 68 and already getting about $1,800 per month from Social Security.

Any chance I can receive benefits based on his record?

A: Yes. Under Social Security, a divorced spouse who was married for more than 10 years and is currently unmarried is entitled to the same benefits as a spouse.
