U.S. stocks open lower ahead of economic data

NEW YORK -- Worries about the holiday shopping season sent stocks sharply lower Monday while investors also awaited new readings on manufacturing and construction spending. The Dow Jones industrial average fell about 300 points, giving back a chunk of last week's big gains.
