Sooners bask in the glow of more BCS
Oklahoma fans are like most college football fans. They loved to bash the BCS.
The Bowl Championship Series is the biggest punching bag in sports. But Sooner fans should have a soft spot in their part for the system that for 10 years has picked the teams for big-time football's two-team championship game. The BCS has been very, very good to Oklahoma. The BCS on Sunday broke the three-way tie among OU, Texas Tech and Texas for the Big 12 South Division title. The Sooners are ranked No. 2 in the BCS, ahead of No. 3 Texas and No. 7 Tech, so OU will play Missouri on Saturday night in Kansas City, Mo., for the Big 12 title. OU coach Bob Stoops said he woke up Sunday morning with a “knot in my stomach. I had to remind myself we won last night.” But BCS history should have been a calming influence on Stoops. The Sooners have been well-treated in BCS debates. Since 2003, OU has been in four BCS logjams; they've been rewarded in three of those: * 2003: OU, LSU and Southern Cal all finished the season with one loss, but only the Sooners lost their finale. Yet OU and LSU were placed in the national title Sugar Bowl, leaving USC out. OU was No. 3 in both polls, but a consensus No. 1 in the computers. The formula was changed after 2003 to give the polls more power. If you prefer your thoughts to appear in The Oklahoman's Opinion section, we encourage you to submit a letter to the editor.
