All-State 2008: BJ Herring (Defensive Line)

If you're a quarterback, Glenpool defensive end BJ Herring isn't the kind of guy you want to be running into on the field.

Herring was a dominant force on Glenpool's Class 4A state championship team that ended Bishop McGuinness' two-year run. Herring had 89 tackles and 26 sacks. It was the kind of season he had always dreamed of, and one he knew would be different from the first snap in the first game.

“When we played our first game everyone picked us to beat Berryhill by a touchdown,” he said. “We won 47-0. I think we knew right then we were going to be better than everyone said.”

Herring’s sack total was tops in Class 4A, something he said was set up in months before.

“It started early in the summer lifting and running,” he said. “I had to make a lot of sacrifices. We all did.”

But they paid off as Glenpool won state, avenging a playoff loss to the Irish from the season before.

“I don't think we thought of revenge going in,” he said. “Maybe a little bit, but I'm glad we won. It would have been pretty depressing otherwise.”

Now Herring hopes to continue his playing career in college. There aren't many offers yet. As great as his season was there are some colleges that think he's undersized.

“I plan on playing somewhere, wherever it is I'm going to be dedicated,” he said.
