Dec 28Trooper Charlie Hanger searches Timothy McVeigh's car on April 19,...

A long-secret video recording from the Oklahoma City bombing case reveals a slice of history — a trooper’s search of bomber Timothy McVeigh’s getaway car.

McVeigh is never shown on the 28-minute recording obtained by The Oklahoman.

Still, the recording from the trooper’s dashboard camera provides a unique and somewhat eerie perspective: what McVeigh saw in the first minutes after his capture along Interstate 35 in northern rural Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Charlie Hanger turned on the camera after arresting McVeigh on the morning of the attack. He said at McVeigh’s trial that he had intended to record his interview of McVeigh, but pushed the wrong two buttons.

McVeigh was handcuffed in the front passenger seat.

Hanger, now sheriff of Noble County, said in a speech in August, "I just happened to be at the right spot at the right time, and things fell in place.”

The Oklahoma City National Memorial plans to use the recording in a documentary about McVeigh’s arrest to be shown at the museum next year.

The memorial obtained a copy of the recording from the FBI on Dec. 17 after learning about its existence from Hanger and The Oklahoman. The memorial provided a copy to The Oklahoman.

The museum focuses mostly on the tragedy itself, the victims and the worldwide response, but officials have added exhibits in recent years that show more about the bombing investigation.

"People want to feel good about something bad,” said Kari F. Watkins, the memorial’s executive director. "Seeing that justice was served makes people have a sense of pride, that good overcame evil.”

The trooper’s recording was not shown at any of the three bombing trials. It is one of several video recordings that have remained secret since the FBI gathered them as evidence in 1995.

The trooper stopped McVeigh 75 minutes after the April 19, 1995, bombing after noticing McVeigh’s Mercury Marquis was missing a license tag. McVeigh was arrested during a traffic stop after the trooper discovered a loaded .45-caliber Glock handgun beneath his jacket.

Hanger did not know the significance of the arrest until two days later when federal agents identified McVeigh as a suspect in the bombing. McVeigh was still in the Noble County jail for the concealed weapon offense.

The recording shows Hanger walking to the getaway car, writing down a vehicle identification number and searching the interior. He then returns to his patrol car.

A few minutes later, Hanger walks back to the getaway car, makes sure its doors are locked, checks the trunk and rolls up the driver’s window.

The trooper then drives across the I-35 median and goes south toward Perry.

I find it difficult to believe that Officer Hanger was telling the truth when he said he pushed the wrong buttons. What we're allowed to see reveals nothing to us. We should wake up and realize that police officers are capable of telling big lies.

How bad is it that a trooper who can't work a simple dash cam is now the sheriff of an entire county? YIKES! Dash cam videos on closed cases should have public access. Why the heel drag on this one I wonder?
Now, about the article: you guys DO realize that a newspaper's intent is not necessarily to inform but to sell papers right? That's why I read them online only: no risk of lead poisoning & I don't give $$ to the folks who print this drivel.
I also don't use the Oklahoman because I don't need a paper to give me a "prayer for the day"... I have a direct connection with my God.

Yeah, they really threw us a bone with this "story", huh? lol It is refreshing to know that people still have questions. And, having those unanswered questions does NOT make you a conspiracy nut.

Do 15 minutes of research and you will understand that there is much, much, much more to the bombing than just McVeigh and Nichols. Please use your brains.

Rick/OKC, I will pray for you. If you will read, just above the "leave a comment,"you will notice the editor's note. Even the editor tries to be empathetic in this historical tragedy. Won't you try? As you can see, some people are making a joke out of this article. I may be a whiner (some would even call it mourning), but I wonder how you would feel if it was part of your immediate family that was caught in the bombing.

In our household we would swear this tape was seen right after the actual arrest. What is up with all the hype now? WE WILL NEVER FORGET! OK? I lived in Edmond and felt the bombing. There are countless lives that were ruined. There are rescue personnel who have lost marriages, become addicted and on and on. We knew after that day that our sheltered little heartland would have to get tough. We have. All we can do is pray and try to be vigilant. I have a daughter who has to leave town on her birthday every April 19. We can do nothing about the past. Let's educate ourselves and our children and grand-children and look to the future. Roni~OKC

I believe that luxury sled is now on the south side of OKC...it's a thriller 'hoopty'. 'A fine fox in front and three more in the back'.
Chris, Jones - Dec 29, 2008 at 11:20 am
Whatever happened to that "fine ride"?

I would bet money (my money) that I've seen this video before...way back. Or perhaps it was just a still photo...but I've seen the car pulled over on the side of the road before. And to all of you conspiracy theorists - get a life and take your meds. You give the govt waaaaaaaay too much credit.

alan, oklahoma city -

Good grief, are you just a whiner? This is the 3rd article I've read and the second time I've seen you crying around about how this shouldn't be an article with comments.

Grow some, would you?

You guys do realize you are arguinh over a story about as pointless as the video itself!
Ashley, oklahoma city - Dec 29, 2008 at 8:44 am
Are you kidding me? Get this off the comments board! Look at the editors note above. Do you even have someone at the DOK with that title?

As is typical in many media outlets.....................they don't show you the entire tape. Why not show the entire video if it is available? I wanna see him talking to this killer and see how this killer responds.

The Trooper did a gret job in stopping this car and making an arrest on this worthless coward. For what ever reason he decided to make the stop, I just have to say thank you. I agree with everyone here, the tape shows us nothing and the Oklahoman just opening doors that didn't need to be opened. All this story does is bring back memories of the dead, hurt and sad. Come on Oklahoman, can you not find something else to print, other than the past that hurt so many people...GET A CLUE.

McVeigh IS like Oswald. Oswald really shot Kennedy, and McVeigh really blew up the Murrah building. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a dumb-butt. On the plus side, I hear that those foil hats conform to a very nice fit. ---But I will also say one more thing. This clip is a great, big snoozer. Pretty much like the reporter.
stinkerpants, Oklahoma City - Dec 29, 2008 at 12:36 am
Blah, blah, blah. Still all hustle and no facts - typical of those who like to make sweeping assertions without backing them up with facts. They tend to start sniveling and pouting when called on it, and P, Sulphur is right on cue. And I love it when the anonymous internet resume padding starts (here's P, Sulphur in full Walter Mitty fantasy-life mode): "While I was out gaining personal experience in; firing high velocity projectiles, rocket propelled weapons, aerospace weaponary and even ANFO based blasting"____Yeah, right - and at the same time I was an astronaut who did brain surgery on the side when I wasn't busy flying the Space Shuttle...(*rolls eyes*). Listen up, Bucko: if you want to present some FACTS to back up your silly claims that massive conspiracies everywhere are running the world, post them. If not, realize that you're just embarrassing yourself further with each subsequent post. But by all means, don't let me interrupt your fool's errand...
Jason, Edmond - Dec 28, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Jason, Edmond... You're right. I am all green, with envy, as I stand before you, my "intellectual better". And to think... While I was out gaining personal experience in; firing high velocity projectiles, rocket propelled weapons, aerospace weaponary and even ANFO based blasting, I could have simply sat on my butt, like YOU, read a bunch of books and declared myself a supreme being. How could I have been so blind and naive? I feel sorry, for you, little man... Now, go pee down someone else's leg and try to convince them, it's raining. You bore me Sherlock!

This tape was overhyped not only in the Oklahoman but also on News 9. I just don't get how that is a front page story. And channel 9 said the trooper had a copy of the tape for himself..isn't that against the law
Michael, Moore - Dec 28, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Sallie, it may be my brain that is slow this beautiful afternoon, not yours. Looking back, I don't really see where we have a disagreement other than I might have misunderstood what you were trying to get across about McVeigh. My thesis is that Oswald and McVeigh shared a passionate hatred of the United States government - in the former's case so much so that he actually defected to the Soviet Union and, before Dallas, was attempting to defect to Cuba. The motive for their hatred sprang from different *origins*, of course, which made it a hatred similar in KIND, just not similar in CAUSE. Both were former veterans who learned at least some of the skills they later used to commit their crimes at the hands of the same government they came to hate - in Oswald's case the Marines; in McVeigh's the Army. Both saw themselves as repressed, put-upon victims of a government "out to get" not only them, but a whole class of victims they presumed to be striking back in the name of. That is is my belief, and if I saw disagreement in your posts where there is none, I apologize.
Jason, Edmond - Dec 28, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Jason, Edmond....please clarify for me our disagreement. Apologies for the slow brain. Conspiracy theories....I have heard so many of those over the years,....explain the difference again, (or the sameness) of McVeigh and Oswald please, if you don't mind. Many thanks.
Sallie, Del City - Dec 28, 2008 at 4:28 pm
BTW, on a side note to this diversion about JFK: I read an excellent book over the week of Christmas titled "Death of a Generation: How the assassination of Diem and JFK prolonged the Vietnam War." The author is Howard Jones. I do not agree with all of its conclusions, or even most of them, but it gives a good accounting of the period and is well researched. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the genuine history of the Kennedy years as opposed to the Camelot fluff.
