MIDWEST CITY — Carl Albert started the season with a loss to Tulsa Washington. Three months and one day later, the Titans finished the season the same way.

In between there were 13 consecutive victories, most by blowout scores. And while players such as Daytawion Lowe and David Oku received the majority of the credit, nobody was more important than Christian Smith in the Titans’ 13-game run.

Smith, a 6-0, 226-pound defensive lineman, was essential in the game-by-game improvement of Carl Albert’s defense. In that season-opening loss to Tulsa Washington, the Titans allowed 40 points. Then in a win over Choctaw the following week, Carl Albert gave up 20 points.

From that point on Sept. 12 through the Class 5A state semifinals on Nov. 29, the Titans never allowed more than 15 points in a game. What’s more, for five straight games, the Titans never allowed more than a touchdown.

Smith was a force in halting opposing offenses. He had 93 tackles (a terrific number for a down lineman) and four sacks. He even contributed a touchdown down catch on offense. While Carl Albert fell in the 5A championship game to BTW by 11 points, it was obvious the improvement that had been made by the defense. Smith led a defensive front that helped the Titans hold foes to 111.2 yards a game and a mere 88.5 yards passing.
