Oklahoma City Zoo officials are looking for donations to create interactive toys for the animals, according to the zoo Web site.
Zookeepers create toys and treats that encourage animals to do activities as they would in the wild, such as forage or explore. Enrichment activities can range from a ball game to an interesting snack. Edible items are needed such as honey, mustard, sugar-free jellies and jams, sugar-free Kool-Aid, flour, Cheerios, raw nuts in the shell, raisins, baby food, food coloring and liquid natural extracts. Cake and gelatin molds and mixing bowls are needed as well. Keepers also could use plain untreated items, such as cotton and sisal rope, 2-inch-by-4-inch lumber, raffia, leather strips and ice cream sticks. They can make toys with perfumes, colognes, paper bags, bubbles, blankets and sheets. Some animals can paint with tempera paints, canvases and brushes. Like many domesticated pets, zoo animals enjoy basketballs, Kong toys and Frisbees. All donations can be made in the guest relations office at the main entrance. For more information, call 424-3344.
