KWTV-9 sports director Dean Blevins said he hopes to be released from OU Medical Center on Thursday while he recovers from a severe head injury.

Blevins, who said he is suffering from migraine headaches, slipped on ice at his home in northwest Edmond on Monday afternoon and hit his head on a step.

“I think the best-case scenario is they tell me tomorrow (Thursday) that I’m cleared to get out,” Blevins said this afternoon. “But they are going to be monitoring it regularly. There are questions about whether it affects your speech and some cognitive issues. I will be working with a speech pathologist.”

The story on Blevins' accident was the No. 2 most-read story on NewsOK on Tuesday, a fact that Blevins said Mayor Mick Cornett kidded him about in a telephone call Wednesday morning.

He said Cornett told him, “I always told you the reason that people wanted you to work for them was that you’re the No. 1 lightning rod, sort of like Howard Cosell. There were 27,000 people that read it — 13,000 probably hoped you die and the other 14,000 people wished you well.”

Blevins noted that he is being treated by the same doctors who a year ago operated on his 9-year-old son, Carson, for a neurological problem.

“They have a great trauma staff here,” he said.
