Share “Inside the OU 2009 recruiting class”

Oklahoman Published: February 5, 2009
Josh Aladenoye
→School: Mesquite (Texas) HS

Pos.: Offensive lineman

→Ht/Wt.: 6-5/350

→Chose OU over: OSU, Texas Tech, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas

Where he fits in: OU loses four starters, but it’s hard to believe a freshman could come in and contribute right away. More likely, Aladenoye will provide depth or redshirt.

Long term: Probably won’t compete for a starting spot until at least 2010.

Drew Allen
→School: San Antonio Alamo Heights HS

Pos.: Quarterback

→Ht/Wt.: 6-5/210

→Chose OU over: OSU, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Colorado, Kansas State, Ole Miss

Where he fits in: For now, Allen will be OU’s third-team QB behind Sam Bradford and Landry Jones. Barring injury to either of those two, Allen is likely to redshirt.

Long term: When Bradford finally decides to leave, Allen and Jones will compete for the starting job.

Jaydan Bird
→School: Conway Springs (Kan.) HS

Pos.: Linebacker

→Ht/Wt.: 6-2/220

→Chose OU over: Kansas, Kansas State

Where he fits in: The Sooners are loaded at LB, making Bird a probable redshirt candidate.

Long term: At some point, perhaps as soon as 2010, Bird will compete for playing time, probably at middle linebacker.

Kevin Brent
→School: Dallas South Oak Cliff HS

Pos.: Safety

→Ht/Wt.: 6-0/195

→Chose OU over: LSU, USC, Miami, Kansas, Texas, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Texas Tech, Missouri

Where he fits in: Brent, one of the most coveted recruits in this class, could see playing time immediately at safety with Nic Harris and Lendy Holmes (also a South Oak Cliff alum) both graduating.

Long term: In 2010, Brent could team up with Sam Proctor, Joseph Ibiloye and Javon Harris to form a talented, young foursome at safety.

Jarrett Brown
→School: Arlington (Texas) Bowie HS

Pos.: Defensive end

→Ht/Wt.: 6-4/240

→Chose OU over: Kansas State and Tennessee

Where he fits in: One of three defensive ends in this class, Brown will almost surely redshirt next season.

Long term: Brown will have the chance to be part of the defensive end rotation within a couple of years.

Justin Chaisson
→School: Las Vegas Bishop Gorman HS

Pos.: Defensive end

→Ht/Wt.: 6-4/250

→Chose OU over: UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, California, Florida, Iowa

Where he fits in: With so much depth at DE in place, Chaisson likely will redshirt.

Long term: Much like with R.J. Washington, the Sooners will bring Chaisson along slowly. In 2-3 years, he could become a solid complement opposite Washington.

Tyler Evans
→School: Strafford (Mo.) HS

Pos.: Offensive lineman

→Ht/Wt.: 6-5/300

→Chose OU over: Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri

Where he fits in: Like most OU freshman linemen, Evans is more likely to redshirt than play right away.

Long term: The Sooners will have a spot opening up at guard in 2010 after the graduation of Brian Simmons; Evans could factor into the rotation as early as then.

Terry Franklin
→School: Legacy Mansfield (Texas) HS

Pos.: Defensive end

→Ht/Wt.: 6-4/210

→Chose OU over: N/A

Where he fits in: OU brings back four at end, meaning Franklin will redshirt.

Long term: Because he’s been competing against a JV schedule at Legacy Mansfield, which is starting up its football program, Franklin could be somewhat of a project.
