TULSA — Japanese aircraft bombed the island by day and Japanese ships shelled the island by night.

Veteran Matthew Dillon remembers well the hell that was the Battle of Guadalcanal, which ended 66 years ago today.

The World War II battle for the 2,500-square-mile island northeast of Australia raged for six months, from August 1942 until Feb. 9, 1943.

For Dillon, Guadalcanal was oppressive heat and humidity, a lack of sanitation, a lack of food and adequate medical supplies, and every conceivable nasty vermin, joined by billowing clouds of mosquitoes.

More than 7,000 Americans and 30,000 Japanese died in battle, but that wasn’t the only loss of life.

"Many of our guys just didn’t want to go home again after that, and a lot of them were committing suicide,” said Dillon, his emotions getting the best of him last week at his Tulsa home.
