Hundreds of children were romping around the Edgemere Elementary School cafeteria, flinging their backpacks and running like a herd of wildebeests.

What is it?

→The Paseo Edgemere Educational Partnership, called PEEPs for short, is a pilot program that began this semester. The partnership between the Paseo Arts District with nearby Edgemere Elementary School helps give students an outlet for artistic expression and learning.

The room was packed to the brim with kindergarteners, first- and second-graders. It was wall-to-wall squiggling, squirming and shouting. This was insanity. How would the other volunteer and I be able to wrangle them in? We started by taking roll.

There were 14 kids. Only 14? It seemed like so many more — so many, many more.

Bless schoolteachers.

A friend and I went to help teach an art class with the Paseo Edgemere Educational Partnership, called PEEPs, for short. The pilot program began this semester. It partners artists from Paseo Arts District with students at nearby Edgemere Elementary for an after-school lesson. The program will culminate with an art show later this semester. The partnership is a great idea, and hopefully it will continue and set an example for other neighborhoods and schools in the city.

The day I went, the art teacher needed a substitute to fill in.
